5.0 out of 5 stars My 6 & 4 Year Old's Love It, 28 Dec 2007

This review is from: Fisher-Price Digital Arts and Crafts Studio (Toy)
I agree with 'My 5 year old's favorite toy' review. It's a great toy. I'm running it on a 7 Yr old dell PC with XP and 64mb Video card, which is now theirs, and it works a charm. Just the right level for them. Really good educational tool for budding graphics artists.

I was a bit sceptical about this due to reviews, but most of the bad reviews are installation problems and not about the usage of the studio. I agree that installing this on XP with limited access for kids was a bit of a pain, but being IT literate it didn't take long to figure out. Install as Adminstrator when logged in as Limited access user. Ensure that no other programs are running anywhere else when installing and you'll be fine.

My only gripe is that it doesn't work in true Windows mode and this means that you don't have access to other programs when it's running, which is a pain as the print jobs go to a PDF writer, which is hidden from view by the studio.

My eldest had a choice between the studio or Dr Who Daleks and this comes first all the time. It even beats the Scalextric. I've given it 5 Stars as my kids love it and I've not heard them have so much fun for a while.

4.0 out of 5 stars My 5 year old's favorite toy., 10 Dec 2007

We bought this for my daughters fifth birthday and both her and her two year old sister have had endless fun with it. It works perfectly on our four year old not very high spec PC and the settings are such that when it is on there is no danger of the kids pressing the wrong button and ending up messing up your computer which is always the danger when playing on other programmes. There are loads of different activities and it is easy to navigate. It also seems pretty robust as it has so far survived the intensive scribblings of a 2-year old. My only suggestion is to turn your printer off when they are using it as it is easy to print pictures and your ink will run out pretty quickly otherwise

4.0 out of 5 stars My Kids love it, 15 Mar 2008

I got this for my daughter for Christmas and it has been used regularly since by both her (7) and my son (4). Basically it's a small tablet device that plugs into the USB port on your PC and using the supplied software they can either free draw or do one of the in-built projects, colouring pages/paper 'planes/etc. It is very simple to use and the biggest problem is that there is only a 256 colour palate (which I suppose is to give children a limited choice rather than a technical issue).

It is very simple to use, once it is all setup and I haven't really had any major problems with it.

I have the software installed on a selection of machines, an old Dell laptop (it's over 5 years old and it works fine reguardless of what some of the previous reviews say) a Dell PC which is about 3 years old (again it works fine) and a new top end Toshiba laptop again it all works fine. The big technial bits are that you do need a minimum of 64 MB of dedicated video RAM (which my old laptop does have, but lots of new ones come with shared system RAM which may involve you changing some BIOS settings). I also had a couple of issues with the initial setup, but installing Microsoft .Net Framework 2 or above sorted this - this is an optional update from Microsoft so you may need to look for this. I work in IT so I know what I'm doing with this type of thing. There has also been an update to the supplied software which could possibly fix some of the problems faced by the other reviewers on here. The download was automatically picked up by machine from the Fisher Price web site and downloaded and installed with no problems.

My kids love it 8/10
