Amazon.co.uk Review

Technology meets tradition in this developmental toy from Fisher Price. Geared for infants from 6 months and on the verge of crawling, this toy encourages all of the typical activities associated with this stage of development but with the newest, most modern sound and light effects.

The Crawl-Along Drum Roll encompasses a sturdy clear drum with brightly coloured end pieces and spiralling lights, and three plastic balls. At one end of the drum is an opening with a sensor, so that when the balls--or any object, even small hands--pass over it, it sets off a silly sound effect and twinkling lights. (Note--the sensor is not effective if playing with this item in very bright natural or artificial light.) The bouncy "baby techno" music and four sound effects are controllable with an on-off switch and two volume settings.

The activities encouraged by this toy are intended to stimulate a child's development in 3 areas: developing motor skills by rolling the drum and grasping and chasing the balls, stimulating the senses through the sound effects and twinkling lights and encouraging cognitive abilities through the placement of the balls in the drum and hearing the resulting silly sounds. Of course, even without the sound effects, babies can see and hear the balls drop once pushed through the opening, and our 10 month old testers seemed to prefer this simple activity overall.

A robust and lively toy for any baby nearly on the go. Requires 3 AA alkaline batteries(not included).--Ann Prahl

Manufacturer's Description

my one year old son, the youngest of three does not need many toys, but much to my suprise this was the perfect buy! He has had the "crawl along drum roll" since the age of five months and is still being fascinated by it. He began with using it to push along as he was beginning to crawl, the lights and music kept him stimulated. He continues to play with the toy as now he is at the stage where he LOVES to put the balls inside as well as his other small toys. He also has learned to look and reach inside. The toy seems to keep him occupied, more so than some others. It can be packed up quite easily, allowing you to put the balls inside. The toy is very sturdy (since the older two have to examine also). I can honestly say this toy is worthwile, especially since he has grown with it. I also feel he not only started to crawl by following the rolling drum but is now still learning to play with it in different ways!

Lots of Tumbling Fun! 22 Jan 2002

The Playzone Crawl Along Drum Roll was not something I necessarily wanted in my home. I tried to keep all of the electronic toys at bay, hoping my child would grow up around developmental toys that didn't make noise.
After receiving this drum for Christmas, I changed my mind. He absolutely loves the flashing lights, and the tune is VERY catchy. I've seen my husband be-boppin' along to the music.
The drum has an Off/Low/High volume control, which every parent can appreciate. It comes with three balls, to boost your child's put-and-take ability, and as he places the ball inside, the drum makes a kooky sound to let you know it's gone in.
This toy is very helpful to those of us who have babies who are apprehensive about crawling, because it encourages them to move around the floor by playing the music only when it is touched.
The Playzone Crawl Along Drum Roll is definitely worth the small price. It will last for a long time, too.

Oh my gosh! WE LOVE THIS TOY :) 27 July 2001

I had bought the Crawl-along drum roll for my 6 month old daughter. Wow! Her eyes light up with amazement! She can't get enough of it. And the good thing is.....it will last her through several stages! Right now she watches the lights, pushes it around and listens to the music. But within a month she will be crawling with it and a few months after that she will be putting the balls in the container and so on....Well worth the money for 5 months on up. I give this one a BIG THUMBS UP!!

Durable, Educational ,& A Great Parent Child Toy. 13 Nov 2001

My son loves this toy:) My son is 2 1/2 & he enjoys rolling it to mom. We have a special game, when no balls roll out we all cheer!! When the balls roll out we say "AAhhh". We have loads of fun. This toy is educational, because it teaches a child to dump the balls out (cause & effect), it teaches a child to roll, and it even teaches a child to roll with his foot the beinning steps to kicking a ball(Gross Motor & fine motor)!
You can even be silly by dancing with the music.(auditory)(pretend play) Oh, by the way this toy is very durable. We have a very steep stairway with hard wood floors, no carpet & my son through it down the stairs several times & it still works great! (cost efficient)
This is a grow with child toy & for such a great price!!!

Cool toy 14 Nov 2001

My son absolutely loves this toy. He received it as a gift when he was a newborn and was instantly attracted to the lights and cool music. It's actually not too annoying for Mommy either! The balls do fall out rather easily, but that might be kinda the point to the toy? My son can't crawl yet but loves to sit with the toy.

Why not to buy this toy 14 Oct 2002
By "aloomis5" - Published on Amazon.com

1. Annoying music.
2. Music starts automatically - usually after putting your child down for a nap - just when you are about to fall asleep yourself.
3. Other toys fit inside. Normally you would think this is cool, however, my child is very good at jamming in items that are just a tad too large to remove. He then gets frustrated and screams. I (Mama) then try to remove the too large toy - unfortunately I can't always get them out (Daddy!).
4. Hole in top is just large enough for little hands to get stuck when they try to remove one of the aforementioned toys. It took a long time for my son to figure out why his hand was stuck. Lots of crying and screaming.
5. My son has yet to actually roll it (he's had it for months).
6. You can never find the balls that go with it. They always seem to be under a piece of furniture or at the bottom of the toy chest. And there are only 2 or 3 balls, so it's not like there are extras around to be seen among the million other toys.
7. My son loves to stand on this toy. One of these days he will learn the hard way that barrels roll.
I can only think of one good thing to say about this toy - there aren't a million parts.
