2.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea for a Series but only the Introduction is helpful 31 Oct 2012

Two comments:

*this book is an excellent introduction to the materials industry. You will learn a lot of vocabulary terms, a lot of interesting factoids, and a lot of interesting stuff in general. If the entire book had confined itself to an introduction, it would have merited 5 stars.

*the rest of the book is not helpful. This is a 'here is how hard things are so you'd better let us do it' type of book verses a serious attempt at teaching. This often involves pages of simple lists of risks, valuation metrics, and strategic attributes, among others, and neglects to mention any specific company as an illustration. Let's repeat that - the security analysis section never mentions a single company.

From the previews on Amazon, apparently all of these books at like this, which is clearly a lost opportunity as a series of books on different industry groups is a truly brilliant idea but Fisher Investments essentially wrote these as the firm's promotional material verses an serious attempt to educate. That's a shame in my view.

Maybe somebody will do it right one day.

Recommendation: If you want to read it, get it from a library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another easy read... 26 July 2011

I'm not going to rehash what's in this book... you can read the product information for yourself. My comments concern the readability, clearness & knowledge of the material presented. This is another one of the 'investment series from the Fisher Investments Press.
I have read several of their books. Clearly... they know how to write with clarity for the individual investor. This book is no exception... easy to understand, lots of need to know information... you'll walk away knowing what the "material sector " is all about.
