Review

'Blend of tips, funny anecdotes from a freelance journalist, novelist and self-confessed imperfect mother of three. Love the title and the assertion that raising kids is like looking after small, very drunk people' (The Bookseller on THE FISH FINGER YEARS )

'A bitter-sweet take on bringing up the baby in modern times and a great first book' (Heat on BABYFACE )

'BABYFACE is enthralling. Gibson's original voice is at once comic and accurate' (Adele Parks )

'A funny and compelling novel that will appeal to new mums' (Pregnancy on BABYFACE )

'A fantastic debut. More than funny, it's true' (Louise Bagshawe on BABYFACE )

'A funny, warm, compelling and wonderfully observed novel, hilarious to singletons and mothers alike' Marie Claire on BABYFACE

'Refreshingly honest and very funny... Gibson, a natural writer who gets the reader's empathy at every turn of the page, looks at the nitty-gritty of child-rearing, but doesn't offer advice. She just wants us to laugh... ' (Birmingham Post )

Product Description

If you have an embarrassing child who bursts into friends' houses announcing 'It stinks in here' or shouts 'why is that man so fat?' on the bus (and not a spooky child who replaces felt-tip lids and enjoys dusting) then this book is for you.

Self-confessed imperfect mum Fiona Gibson blends her own hilarious tales of raising three children with anecdotes and nuggets of advice from 300 fellow parents who admit they too get things wrong occasionally.

Stories and tips cover a huge range of parenting dilemmas, from 'what to do if your child has a screaming, plank-rigid wobbler in M&S, and everyone's giving you Bad Parent looks' and 'how to handle a foul-mouthed monster obsessed with the toilet parts of horses' to 'sex: should you make the effort or just not bother?'.

Above all, this funny, refreshingly honest look at being a real-life mum will come as a welcome reminder that yours is not the only family who can't go to Ikea without tears, tantrums and the threat of divorce... (20050304)

I started flicking through this in a bookshop and was hooting with laughter so much that it became embarrassing and I had to buy it and get out of there! Kept picking it up and finding good bits and reading them out to whoever would listen. Everybody loves it - so different from the normal "how to do everything right" books - every story makes you feel a whole lot better about the way you try to cope with your kids. It should be distributed free of charge in those otherwise useless maternity gift packs they give you. Read it and weep with laughter.

The Fish Finger Years is a refreshing book that examines the imperfections and challenges of family life in just about every situation - indoor and out - with genuine warmth and humour. I thought it was an hilarious antidote to all those stern books and TV programmes that promise children will toe the line if you only use enough wall charts and smiley-face stickers. Rather than pretending to know it all, Fiona Gibson has drawn on her own experience as a mother of three to home in on the nitty gritty of parenting, with the help of numerous other parents sharing anecdotes, tips and hard-earned wisdom based on what has gone right - and wrong - in their families. Genuinely useful, extremely funny, never patronising. And if you've just had a baby it'll make you feel a bit more normal for the next 18 years!

Being a mum is harder than it looks. Am I the only one who's torn out her hair and wept quietly because family life isn't the rose-tinted picnic-filled idyll I promised myself it'd be? It's all too easy to beat ourselves up for not being the perfect mum, but hey, finally, here's a book that looks at parenting the way it really is! The Fish Finger Years has helped me to ditch the guilt and enjoy my kids, have fun and forget about being perfect. This book should be given to all new mums - and all experienced mums, too! It's funny, reassuring, comforting, kind, creative - and full of real-life experiences, practical advice and laugh-out-loud anecdotes. It's the best book I've bought in ages - I loved it!
