Rare recorded documents of Fischer-Dieskau singing Heinrich Schutz (no sung texts included, though) 11 Nov 2012
By G.C. - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau left a tremendous legacy of recordings, primarily in the Lieder repertoire, as classical music fans know. However, one composer not noted among his recorded legacy is Heinrich Schutz, as according to the liner notes of this Hanssler Classic CD, Fischer-Dieskau made only one commercial recording of Schutz's music, for Deutsche Grammophon, which has never been re-released on CD. A quick check of DG's website reveals that is still the case with that recording. So these recordings of radio concert performances by Fischer-Dieskau of music of Schutz become of special interest for fans in both realms, either Fischer-Dieskau or Schutz.

These recordings date from the period of 1953-1959, so that we have the young Fischer-Dieskau captured here. The notes by Peter T. Koster (translated by Wieland Hoban) mention "forceful text declamation" as one notable artistic property of Fischer-Dieskau. That certainly comes across in these selections, which take their texts from the Bible or are inspired by Biblical texts. Sometimes his "forceful text declamation" can somehow seem a touch mannered, which was one criticism directed at him during his lifetime. It's hard to explain without actually listening to the selections. I need to note that the sung texts are not included in the booklet, although the notes make general references to the particular Bible passages or sections which Schutz set. So with a Bible on hand, you can get a rough idea of the text being sung, in several cases. Otherwise, you might have to refer to other recordings.

For the most part, the works tend to be somewhat slower and more contemplative than fast and energetic, fitting given the nature of the sacred texts as inspiration. The instrumental forces are not period instrument, but they are small-sized and far from grandiose, in anticipation of "period instrument" use of downsized forces. The sound is clean 1950's mono quality. The one "complete" work is track 3, "Die Sieben Worte unseres lieben Erlosers und Seeligmachers Jesu Christi" ("The Seven Words of Our Dear Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ"), while the others are selections from his Symphonie sacrae I and II, and his "Kleine Geistliche Konzerte", Books I and II.

If you're a Fischer-Dieskau fan and want to catch him in early phase, in repertoire not associated with him and of which recorded documents are very rare, this CD may interest you.
