Product Description

CD Description

'First party, fire and theft' is the debut release from the Brighton four piece featuring Bob Grover ( ex - The Piranhas ). Shoplifting, divorce, mobile phones, reality TV and missed opportunity are all tossed boldly into Dates lyrical blender and the melodies that they are served with are ear catching and hummable. It weaves in and out of genres like a souped up moped on an Autobahn, with god and Mary Whitehouse riding pillion. Trying to pigeonhole this band is like trying to buttonhole an exiteable childs first tuxedo on the way to a family wedding.

Review

' .....a band and a sound that is the result of squeezing a couple of generations of genius into a small town and combining with a potent cocktail of beer, salt and attitude. Absolutely 100% essence of Brighton.' --Grassroots

"Boring" Bob Grover. The man. Once of Piranhas, now of Dates. And, with the release of "First Party, Fire and Theft" has obviously lost none of his deadpan observational skills.

Dates, based in Brighton, turn out to be a cracking little outfit - matching Bob's tales of urban despair with a fine pop sensibility. Buy this album and you will be swanning around town humming ""Into Stella Philosophy" or "Fifteen Minutes of Shame" in no time at all. Splendid stuff.

Subjects covered range from the pitfalls of celebrity ("15 minutes..."), time and the drudge job ("My boss ain't my boss now, so he can feck off and die"), Mortality (an excellent "Funeral Party" designed to appeal to the more practical among us), lost love (a tale of shoplifting & Tanya from the Tattoo Parlour) and daytime TV. And god.

I repeat, buy this album. Or, if you're passing through Brighton, pop into The Greys and buy the man a drink.

if like me you loved the piranhas, then this cd is right up your street.

it's a glorious return for bob grover and his new band of merry men.

after a long absence this cd hits the button.perfect pop/rock and humerous

but true lyrics all driven along with bright edgy guitars.i consider this album a classic already and i guarantee after two plays all these songs will be firmly planted in your brain.

so if you like your music with a smile you can't go wrong.

Wonderful songs , a slice of witty observations about a variety of subjects ranging from minor celebrity status to death and beyond.
The lyrics to "Unconditional" are so clever , tales of West Street in Brighton and Ann summers organiser's ring in my ears.
" Dog and bone" is now my mobile ring tone, what greater homage could I pay to these guys , buy it , play it , love it and recommend it , I do.
