Going to College or University?
First Year?
Want to know what to expect?

A quick search on Google or Amazon will reveal plenty of material,
mostly written by profs, or deans, or counselors, or trusted experts, or graduating students.

Not this book.

Here, you'll find hundreds of students, mostly in their first year, telling stories about how it feels, as it happens.

Some wise, some crazy.
Some funny, some serious.
Some sad, some scary.

Advice: well yes, but like everything in this book, actually written by students for students, from their own experiences.

Hundreds of stories in their own words. More than 200 voices.

A worthwhile read for students, parents, teachers, counselors.
The accompanying website has 130 more pieces, accessible from inside the book.

About the Author

Dennis Field was a Student, a High School teacher, a Counselor, and a University Professor in Education. He has done extensive work in Science Education, Teacher Education, Teacher Competence, and Teacher Discipline. Nancy Gray worked as a High School teacher for many years. She is the mother of two teenage boys, one of whom is currently a university student. She now works in the field of Social Work. Dennis and Nancy published an earlier edition of First Year University: A Survival Guide in the mid 1980s. This new edition involved their visiting many more than 200 students at many colleges and universities across the US and Canada. Thus First Year University: A Survival Guide is three times the size of the original book. In addition, it has a web component, accessed from links in the printed and kindle editions. First Year University: A Survival Guide was selected as one of five finalists in the Readers' Choice 2012 Awards in its category.

5.0 out of 5 stars This should be required reading for every student going into college or university! 27 April 2011
By Kaitlynn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is the PERFECT book for anyone entering university or college for the first time. Every single Gr. 12 student out there should read this. In fact, this should be required reading before you go to any post-secondary educational institution. You'll get great and practical advice, plus a lot of laughs along the way. Learning from other people's experiences is sometimes the best way to learn, and the best thing about this book is it's written by other students who went through it themselves. The book covers a broad range of subjects, from coming from the country to the city (that would have been helpful for me!), how to deal with boring profs and partying to the staples like skipping classes, how to deal with stress, all-nighters, and whether it's worth it to buy textbooks or not. The online portion of the book complements the print portion - after some of the stories there are web links to follow that will bring you to additional stories - more bang for your buck!

I would have loved to read something like this before I went to university. I read all the information the university sent me to prepare myself, but it just isn't the same thing as reading the advice of students who went through it themselves. So I'm going to pay it forward and give this to my cousin who's graduating Gr. 12 this year. This book will be the best piece of advice and source of information about university she'll find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great High School Grad gift 31 July 2011
By Ryan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I ordered a copy of this book as a grad gift for my brother who is attending his first year of college in the fall. A week after getting it, he asked me where he could order more copies of it for his friends. This seems like an excellent source of information for what what the first year of college / university is really like, from actual students in today's world-- not a professor, or guidance counselor, or some other old person telling you what things were like when they were your age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 1 Aug 2011
By Eliza - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a great read. It's written in short story form, which means it's more likely that students will actually read it, and it's all true. I thoroughly enjoyed it and think all of you grade twelvers will too.
