Book Description

1 July 2007 0979505127 978-0979505126
The First Year of Latin is the product of practical experience in the classroom. It aims in the most direct manner to prepare the pupil to read Caesar¿s Gallic Wars. While a general survey of the essential features of the Latin grammar is made, only those parts are emphasized which are needed. With few exceptions the words and phrases are taken directly from Caesar¿s War with the Helvetii, and by their frequent repetition a sufficient vocabulary is established to simplify the reading of Caesar in the second year. Special attention is given to reviews. At short intervals a lesson is made up of questions on the new forms and constructions of the lessons immediately preceding it, together with a repetition of the new words and such sentences of Caesar as will be used later. The earlier review lessons contain sentences for sight-reading, based on the review vocabulary. In the later lessons connected passages covering chapters 1-12 of The War with the Helvetii replace these.

5.0 out of 5 stars A clarification 27 Jan 2009
By John Kuzma - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The text is an open source textbook dating from the early 20th century. This is not a bad thing, but don't expect the graphical and layout niceties of a more modern text. What makes the book worthwhile is the free online Latin lectures associated with it ([...]).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! 2 Feb 2011
By Felipe Dubois - Published on Amazon.com

I have all sorts of Latin grammar and theory books and this one is one of the best. It is easy to understand and grasp the ideas right at the start.
What helps one learn is that Mr. Linney - latin online teacher - uses this exact book and goes through it chapter by chapter. For all of those that want to learn Latin and are serious about it, buy this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a good solid approach, and Mr. Linney is up to lecture number 48 11 July 2012
By B. F. Mooney - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Not only is the reviewer who takes Mr. Linney to task for hi\s online Latin course silly, unfair, and insulting (see comments already posted on this) because Mr. Linney does his fine work for FREE, but it is sadly OUT of DATE! Folr shame. Your critical remarks are all the more innane now, The Linney course is up to lesson 48 now, in July 2012. Impressive content and progress.

Buy this book (or access for free on Google books), Mr.Linney's own five-star, well-reviewed course book (print or Kindle), and visit his website if you want to learn Latin.
