5.0 out of 5 stars Passionate, pristine..., 1 Aug 2003

This review is from: The First Word Is the Hardest (Audio CD)
Saw these fellows supporting Oceansize and was most impressed: melody, emotion, my God, even real tunes! Waited avidly for their first release following their fortuitous and well-deserved plugging from Radio 1; Moyles in particular. Worth the wait? Definitely.

The title track is initially minimalistic with a simple but beautiful melody which mounts to a searing crescendo. Hear two vocalists hearts breaking before your very ears! Lush.

"Resolve" starts with a subdued piano line and the subtlest of vocals. It builds and builds and then BOOM a massive outro, (which somehow reminds me of Tears for Fears' one great song: "Head over Heels"). Lovely swooping bassline too.

"Too Cool to Shop" is a rocky up-tempo number with nicely bitter lyrics and some very bizarre stuttery ?guitar? noises.

So what do you get for your money? Gorgeous and perfectly controlled vocal harmonies, nicely-judged dynamics, achingly poignant melodies and bit of butt-kicking indie rock at the end.

Buy the single. See them live. Make them stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's about time!, 15 July 2003
This review is from: The First Word Is the Hardest (Audio CD)
I have obtained these three recordings from various parts of cyberspace as endorsements for the band Four Day Hombre, and all of them are excellent. Their style is notably loud, even the relatively slow song "Resolve", which has a great drum trance, superior musicianship, arrangement, and a loud, climactic ending. "Too Cool To Shop" has loud, imaginative, but nearly incomprehendable lyrics, but the superb guitar distortion, and remarkable sound effects leave the aforementioned forgotten. This is a great album with a headbanger-esque techno-rock style that is a must buy for any music lover.

There have been postings of these recordings in various parts of cyberspace, and I have heard the original versions of all three of these songs. All of them are loud, even "Resolve", which is a generally sad song with a remarkable drum trance and a climactic ending. "Too Cool To Shop" is a song that is lyrically incoherent , but great sound effects, guitar distortion, and superb arrangement leave the aforementioned unnoticed. Impeccable design for the headbanger-esque techno genre. A must buy for all music lovers.
