Album Description

"Pianist, composer, bandleader, innovator, catalyst - the
internationally acclaimed Keith Tippett is all these things and more". The
Wire

Keith Tippett is acknowledged as one of the great founding fathers of Post
Modern British `jazz'. A mysterious figure, always on the edge of
contemporary music, he is probably best known for his solo explorations in
spontaneous composition. However, he also has an impressive history of
collective music making with ensembles such as Centipede, Ark, Mujician and
the Georgian Ensemble.

`First Weaving', with its 21 musicians is from the 1998 Le Mans Jazz
Festival. This gigantic session became an underground classic despite never
being commercially available. Originally commissioned by the BBC it stayed

under wraps because the intention was to produce a studio recording for
which the funding never materialised.
`First Weaving' unites some of the most important innovators on the British
and international scenes. They include musicians who were there right at
the beginning with Tippett in Centipede - Larry Stabbins, Louis Moholo,
Mark Charig, Paul Rutherford, Julie Tippetts, Maggie Nicols and the late
Elton Dean, together with other great improvisors such as Gianluigi
Trovesi, Paul Dunmall, Oren Marshall and Tony Levin.

Personnel: Keith Tippett - (piano), Gethin Liddington, Jim Dvorak -
(trumpet), Mark Charig - (cornet, trumpet), Pino Minafra - (trumpet,
megaphone), Malcolm Griffiths, Dave Amis, Paul Rutherford - (trombone),
Oren Marshall - (tuba), Paul Dunmall - (tenor saxophone, bagpipes), Simon
Picard - (tenor Saxophone), Larry Stabbins - (tenor, soprano saxophone),
Elton Dean - (alto saxophone, saxello), Gianluigi Trovesi - (alto
saxophone, alto clarinet), Lee Goodall - (alto saxophone, flute), Julie
Tippetts, Maggie Nicols, Vivien Ellis - (voice), Paul Rogers - (double
bass), Louis Moholo, Tony Levin - (drums)
