Product Description

Product Description
Forget unrealistic childcare manuals - this is the book you really need to help you cope brilliantly with those first chaotic days and months ahead. As a health journalist and mother-of-three, Lucy Atkins is familiar with both the medical aspects of childbirth and baby development, and the reality of day-to-day life as an exhausted first-time mum or dad. In her feisty, humorous style, she begins with that first mind-blowing day and addresses the issues unique to the first-time parent who stares at their newborn and thinks "Where are the instructions?" Anticipating the questions and concerns of all new mothers-Why does my baby cry so much? Will I ever lose all this weight? Am I a bad parent because!, the book provides practical advice and level-headed reassurance. It addresses the needs of the baby and, very importantly, those of the parent during the first year of their baby's life. Contents include: Starter's orders - the equipment and kit you really need, as opposed to what the department store tells you; Hello - how to cope with the first few hours; Start - coming home, bonding, how to survive the first few days; and Sleep - for everyone! Contents also include: Cry - why your baby cries, what to do, why you'll want to cry, too; Eat -breastfeeding, supplemental feeding, moving to solids, nutrition; Grow - baby's physical and mental development; Play - yes, you two actually can have fun; Thrive - health considerations for baby and parent; Live - adapting to your new life, the changing mother-father relationship; Work - coping with being at home and with going back to work. This book also includes information on single parenting, and on adopted, multiple and special needs babies. "The First-Time Parent" is on your side, and reassures that you can cope brilliantly with your new baby and your new life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent down-to-earth advice, 26 Jun 2007
By W. Harvey "WPJH" (Surrey, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having bought and read a large number of baby books (our son was born in Feb '07), this is the best we have found. Honest and very accessible, it's the kind of book you can (and will) turn to again and again before the Big Day and afterwards. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book; A must- read before your baby comes, 12 Sep 2007
By Red Squirrel (Pembrokeshire) - See all my reviews
A wonderful book; honest, humourous, affectionate and never accusing. BUT read it before your baby comes as it is the only thing that can begin to prepare you for the madness! I got it out of my library in desperation when my baby boy was a month old and it made so much sense. I wish I'd had it before the birth, the NHS hospital experience and the sleep deprived first months as it would have made the whole thing far less scary. (By the way; my baby is now an angelic, cute, cuddly, excitable 8 month old. Not because of the book (!) but the book certainly made me love him more as a challenging 4 week old)

5.0 out of 5 stars The only new baby guide worth reading, 29 Oct 2008
By A. Lee - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is the only one that's actually been worth it. The statements are all evidence based (research cited), it makes it very clear that babies differ, and the writer has 3 kids to back that up, and it's honest without being bleak. The advice is sane and warm, and non-prescriptive. So many books are written with a dogmatic certainty, and self-appointed experts scare parents into thinking their way is the only one. This book explores the practicalities, the theories and the realities of having a small baby; sleeping to feeding to the basic baby-kit requirements - but it never loses sight of the fact that life goes on, and babies grow up, and parents can and should take a deep breath and enjoy this time, too. I can't recommend it enough.
