Excellent introduction 20 April 2009
Format:Paperback
Very useful introduction to a lot of vocabulary. Ideal for my daughter who got a Chinese girl who we met on the train to help her with the pronounciations. She then could help with the english version. Colourful illustrations and very clear. All scenes very english though, might have been useful to include some Chinese scenes etc too

I have been deliberating with buying this book for some time, and finally took the plunge. Great book, i speak (almost) fluent chinese so this is a good book to share with my daugher who i am also encouraging to learn. The book is written in sections which allows learning through topics; home, school, hobbies, sea side, colours, numbers etc. Each page has characters and pinyin, no english but the pictures are very clear. If you only speak a little chinese the usborne online tools provide a listening program. I have a feeling this will become a very usefull book. Downsides; the index is written in chinese to english and not in sections so if your looking for a particular word you may find it difficult. Nonetheless, a great book especially for use with multi-lingual children.

This is a brilliant book to help learn Mandarin! I have been studying at college, and this book has been helpful in expanding my vocabulary. The pictures make it bright and interesting (which is always useful while studying). The Chinese characters and pinyin are given. :-)

very limited use
The "first thousand words in Chinese" are for young US/UK kids.
Many of them would be of little to no use to an adult, or, for
that matter, to young kids in China. Read more

Better than a dictionary
The problem with Chinese I feel is that you can't look things up easily in a dictionary, this is very good as a point book for when you want something if you haven't learnt! Read more
