5.0 out of 5 stars Best album ever?, 17 Feb 2006

D. J. Mcardle "Danmac" (Ecuador) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: First Take (Audio CD)
Certainly my favourite album of all time and I worked in a wonderful music shop for 5 years and have a HUGE collection (I'm not boasting, just setting the scene for awe!). The sheer joy and sadness that she can create through her sublime singing and piano playing have me alternating between ecstasy and tears. A real emotional roller-coaster, but worth the pain. The lyrics are a good thirty years old and sound as relevant as ever. We still go to war, still destroy ourselves, still love till it hurts.

I love this so much it hurts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy This Album!!!, 5 Feb 2004
This review is from: First Take (Audio CD)
I first heard a song on the radio late at night. You know where you are just slipping into sleep and a piece of music grabs you? The song stayed with me and forced me to buy it. I'm so glad I did and my favourite track has to be the first song I heard - 'Tryin' Times'. The lyrical content, the drama, poignancy - the message implores you to think. Roberta is a true Diva who deserves far more recognition for her 'uncommercial' music. 'First Time Ever...' has been killed by adverts, soundtracks, etc. but it still remains a masterpiece.
'Angelitos Negros' is wonderful - (I also recommend you hear Celia Cruz's version).

If you love music then ensure your collection has this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most sublime piano / vocal record I have ever enjoyed!, 12 Mar 2001
By
This review is from: First Take (Audio CD)
I can't do justice to the beauty of Roberta's voice with words. All I can say is that you can imagine the tears welling in her eyes as she sings, so engrossing is her performance. She is singing about her own stories, albeit to other peoples' music and you believe every word she sings. Painfully gorgeous, the best track has to be the First Time Ever I Saw Your Face but Tryin' Times and Compared To What cannot go unmentioned.

Buy this album, it will enrich your life.
