4.0 out of 5 stars Highly-strung 27 Mar 2013

Intense and poetic account of a summer spent high in the Californian mountains, looking after a flock of sheep. A blend of botany, geology, and mysticism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top 10 ever 6 May 2014
By S. Indukuri - Published on
I have read several hundred books over my life. This stands as one of the best books I have read. Mr.Muir takes us back a century and half and provides a picture of how world was at that this in intricate detail and description. Had to force myself to not read this but. Nevertheless was able to finish the book in a couple of days. Highly recommended for everyone.

John Muir's description of Yosemite links the religious experience one can have amongst nature. This book will make you want to sleep under the stars!

Much of the text is pure song. The botanical inventory is vast with descriptions which allow the Sierra wanderer to identify what s/he sees.
5.0 out of 5 stars Love his style 4 April 2014

This writer is very profound and his insights are deep. So, if your looking for something carefree and dont want to do any heavy pondering of your own about how he views things this book is not for you. If you enjoy deeper meaning and not just something that requires little thought its great. Makes you think!!! Love seeing his perceptions

A great description of Muir's first encounter with Yosemite and the High Sierras. Love his descriptions and observations as he's hiking into the area for the first time. Makes me want to hike up just the way he did.

(What's this?)
We are now in the mountains and they are in us, kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver, filling every pore and cell of us. Our flesh-and-bone tabernacle seems transparent as glass to the beauty about us, as if truly an inseparable part of it, thrilling with the air and trees, streams and rocks, in the waves of the sun,—a part of all nature, neither old nor young, sick nor well, but immortal. "e;

Another glorious Sierra day in which one seems to be dissolved and absorbed and sent pulsing onward we know not where. Life seems neither long nor short, and we take no more heed to save time or make haste than do the trees and stars. This is true freedom, a good practical sort of immortality. "e;

Here I could stay tethered forever with just bread and water, nor would I be lonely; loved friends and neighbors, as love for everything increased, would seem all the nearer however many the miles and mountains between us. "e;
