This book by S.G.Daniel is really aimed at those who wish or need to be able to read and write Tamil and have accuracy of pronunciation rather than get by speaking it on holiday.
Certainly a Tamil Dictionary & Phrasebook such as Tamil-English/English-Tamil Dictionary and Phrasebook: Romanized (Hippocrene Dictionary and Phrasebook)
by C.J.Victor is needed to complement it.
The book was originally published in 1922 and quite often uses some different word translations to C.J.Victor. Perhaps it is using a different dialect?
The book is structured into short lessons each introducing new characters and/or sounds, but a proper structured introduction to grammar is lacking. Again a book like C.J. Victor's is needed to cover this shortfall.
Finally, its pronunciation guide is quite thorough, but European language examples of the international phonetic symbols would have been a useful addition for the less linguistically trained reader.
