Product Description

The incredible first part of the follow up to bestseller Wool.

Donald Keene has been recruited by the government to design a shelter. He has been told that it is just protocol. That it won’t really be used. That it is ‘just-in-case’.

It is underground.

Over fifty years later Donald’s design has been realised and the last remnants of mankind live in his silo. But no one can remember what life was like before. In fact, they’re forced to forget. One simple pill erases a memory. And with it, any chance of hope.

About the Author

Hugh Howey spent 8 years working as a yacht captain. When he was pulled away from the sea by the love of his life, he turned to his childhood dream of becoming an author. His Molly Fyde series has won praise from reviewers, and now his Wool series has become a #1 bestseller, with Random House publishing in the UK and Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian securing the film rights. He lives in Jupiter, Florida with his wife Amber and their dog Bella.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deja Vu 29 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this book thinking it was the first part of a trilogy following on from the Wool trilogy. It seems this is the first part of the second book in the Wool trilogy. I am happy to read it again as it is a good story however I am annoyed that I have paid for something I already have!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good follow up to the Wool Trilogy 27 Feb 2013
By Paul T
Format:Kindle Edition
I think you need to think of this as a prequel in chronological terms but as a sequel in reading order terms when relating it to Wool. It's a good story, but I'd say having read Wool is a must to get the most out of it. Builds well, took me a good while to identify the character thread linking the two time periods in the book but all in all I enjoyed it and am looking forward to Second Shift.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as the previous 5 volumes 8 Jun 2012
By Emmster TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Just to reiterate the other reviews: if you haven't read the Wool Omnibus Edition (Wool 1 - 5) (or the individual books), do so before reading this book.

This is a prequel to the earlier episodes and contains the same great storytelling and an interesting array of characters. It explains the events and characters responsible for the state of the planet when the Wool series starts. As such it fills in a lot of gaps.

Don't think that this is just filler material though - the story stands on it's own two feet, the characterisations are good and the whole thing is gripping.

If you liked the Wool series then you should enjoy this just as much.

I read fiction for an awesome, immersive experience that sucks me into a story and doesn't let me go until it's done. This book and it's predecessors did that very thing. Awesome work (again) Mr Howey.

5.0 out of 5 stars A believable end to the world as we know it 3 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I can't write much as I have to go and start the next volume in a moment! This first part of the prequel to Wool takes us smoothly through the transition from life as we know it towards the confines of the Silos. Just as the protagonists search for the eternal truths of 'why and how' we learn at least the outline of how the world changed for ever told through the framework of believable characters involved in well rounded lives in jobs and relationships we can recognise and relate to. This is a future too believable not to scare us and now please excuse me as i have to go and find out what happens next. Join me, it is well worth the read!

Often second and third books in a series aren't so good as the first. This was just as good. Couldn't put it down.

This is the 6th part to Wool and I would recommend that you read the omnibus edition of the first five parts before you read this.....Wool Omnibus Edition (Wool 1 - 5)......

This book, 238 pages, continues the tale of the Silo and tells us a bit more about the Legacy and how the events in the first five parts came to be....

Its the story of a Congressman and how he became involved in the Legacy...the story flips between times and places....the reason behind all of this starts to become clearer.....and to be honest I think its all about to become a bit scarier....will people ever be allowed to know the truth?....is the truth too much to bear.....and most pressing for me....Do monsters live forever???...maybe they would if they had the technology to do it.....

So buy this .....I'm loving the story telling and look forward to the next installment.....

For anyone who has read the trilogy this book is an insult. It contains I think not one single new idea.
It tells the story of the first shift seen from silo one. Read more
