Cornelius: One Step Back for Mankind 30 Aug 2000
By Posniak - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
So, there was this band called Flipper's Guitar. Oyamada Keigo and Ozawa Kenji rocked under the Double Knockout Corporation and put out some extremely great pop music. "Doctor Head's World Tower" is a psychadelic-90's-pop masterpiece. Then FLipper's broke up and Oyamada became Cornelius. His first effort went back to the vibe of Flipper's middle period album, "Camera Talk". Golden pop melodies with a full-orchestra feel ("Those horn parts!"). There is a little acid jazz-UFO-kind of feel on one track, but generally the album is full out pop with no samples attached. "69/96" took him more into the rock direction and "Fantasma" took him into the epic masterpiece direction. Before you buy "First Question Award", definately know that it sounds nothing like "Fantasma". But hey, that's half the charm.

Funky, High Energy and Nicely Driving Album ! 2 Jan 2003
By Eddie Landsberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I'm glad to see so many people are writing reviews to this CD... too many great J-Pop artists are virtually unknown in the US.. and clearly Cornelius deserves whatever crossover success he's had so far(though is deserving of infinitely more) - - he's a great performer, a great songwriter, and this CD demonstrates his ability to put out a great and consistant musical product that combines the best elements of "indy" music, yet also demonstrates his superstar quality.

Fantastically engineered and produced, this CD represents the funky Trattoria sound at its best - - While incorporating certain of the "isms" you'd expect to hear on any Japanese pop chart, at times it also incorporates an early '70s "black rock" type thing, and the music you'd hear in those old '70s black action films. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out sound clips from the American groups Rasputin Stash and Black Heat. (Keep in mind that the whole acid Jazz thing was at its peek back then.) - - The basslines (Mecken/Watanabe Hitoshi) drive, the melodies are catchy, the percussion and tambourines are hitting, the arrangements all have a nice soulful/Jazzy rocky edge, and there are some great horn arrangements as well. - - With a heavy hitting studio band, exceptional kudos to the screaming Hammond work of Daisuke Kawai. All in all, even on the more mellow songs this album has a brilliant and soulful drive that makes it in my humble opinion one of the most under-rated J-Pop albums of all time !

(New to J-Pop and looking for something funky...? check out Original Love and Kome Kome Clubs 5/12.)

Definitely NOT Fantasma 17 Feb 2000
By Tre Zieman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I've got mixed feelings about this album. I became an immediate Cornelius addict after hearing Fantasma, and rushed out to buy CM, which I enjoyed just as much as Fantasma. First Question Award is not the same. At all. It's kind of hard to believe that this album was written by the same person. It sounds like the soundtrack to an anime movie. Seriously. I don't really listen to so-called JPop, but I imagine that this album would fit VERY comfortably into that category. If cheesy JPop is your cup of tea, you'll probably love First Question Award. BUT, if you liked Fantasma and want more of the same, this album is not going to quench your thirst, and I would suggest CM over First Question Award. . This is not to say that I don't enjoy this album, because I do, it's just very different and very far from what I was expecting. I haven't heard 69/96 or 96/69 yet (if you know where I can find them, please email me), so I can't make that comparison. From what I've read, though, I would imagine 69/96 to be more like the Cornelius I know and love. Too bad for me it's out of stock at the moment... In summary, I want to emphasize that First Question Award is VERY different from Fantasma, and I have to admit I was a bit disappointed, especially after paying the hefty import price.
