Product Description

The first in the epic Protector of the Small series from award-winning US author, Tamora Pierce. Kel is the first girl to enlist as a page at the palace of Tortall - the first who has dared. She dreams of training to be a warrior knight, like the glorious Alanna, but there's a long way to go...

From the Author

A new girl warrior, with all kinds of differences
About seven years ago I began to realize what a hold the image of a girl warrior, particularly the girl in armor, had on my readers and on me. It occurred to me that I hadn't really explored the idea of female knights to the fullest when I wrote Alanna's story, and that I wanted to give it another try.

I'm an odd creature, though. I didn't want to do Alanna again; I wanted to do something different. Keladry of Mindelan is her own person, different from the other girl warriors I've created. She is big and kind, a diplomat's youngest daughter who hates bullies above all things. Kel is also like most people in her world, forced to live with magic and mages while having no magic of her own. Surrounded by magic--from her friend Neal's healing Gift to the wild magic which has made her animal friends better able to understand and help her--Kel comes to terms with it. Most importantly, everyone knows Kel is a girl. A great many people who think she has no place among the pages, the squires or the knights. They'll do their best to get rid of her. Will they win? Will they break her down? Or will Kel find the things she needs to achieve her dream? My money's on her. She is VERY determined, and she believes in her dreams. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

First test is a wonderful book for anyone who reads about the adventure's of Tortall. A good back where you see Alanna, Daine and Numair again. This is a good book for everyone who for some reason wasn't allowed to do something just because of your appearance.

Keladry of Mindelan is the first girl to try to become a knight openly for over a century.
The training master (lord Wyldon) is firmly against this. Girls are squeemish, they can't fight, they don't have the right figure, right? WRONG! What do you expect if the most dangerous thing you make them do is embroidery?
Lord Wyldon doesn't want her to be given a chance at all, but, after all, it is now possible for girls to try for knighthood. Still, he gets to put her on probation, she has one year to prove she can keep up with the boys and if she can't, it's into the convent for her.
Kel isn't welcomed by most and detested by some, yet with her (what I think) friendly manner, she makes herself some good friends. She learns to ride, fight, solve mathematical problems etc. When Lord Wyldon finds out she's afraid of hights he makes her climb every height possible.
This is a year of fun, excitement, humiliation and desperation for Kel. Will she prove herself worthy?

I love this book! i was hooked. it got me laughing sometimes.

Keladry wants to be a Knight(just like the Lioness of Tortall Alanna)But it's pretty hard for girls to become Knights. Only Alanna has achieved this.

Lord Wyldon has put Kel(11 years old) on probation for a year, but only if she is good enough can she stay and become a second year page. With all the boys bullying her and insulting her, how can she reach her second year as a Page?

Kel has a very difficult year ahead of her. Kel decides the it is not right with all the boys(mostly Joren and his gang) bullying her and other first year pages. But she sorts them out. With black eyes and bruises! But she does get a few friends to help her. With Neal(her sponsor) and others can she stop the Joren and his gang from bullying her and the younger ones?

And can she survive her probation with Wyldon's eyes waiting to see something go wrong. He's putting her through some hard times. But she gets stronger and stronger as the days, weeks and months go by.

But who is giving her gift to help her get through it all? No one knows and who will?

But. And this is a BIG but. i would not read this unless you have read The Songs of the Lioness Quarlet and The Immortals Series. These sort of go with the story. if you dont you may not know who is who and what is what. And you will not get alot of back round knowledge on the Kingdom of Tortall. So i suggest you read the other Quarlets.

But overall this book is SIMPLY THE BEST!!
