5.0 out of 5 stars Dreamlike Quality, Happy Memories, 30 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The First Picture of You (Audio CD)
The title track, The First Picture Of You, is reminiscent of balmy Summer nights, and the flush of first love. The angel-like overlyrics contrast perfectly with the catchy, must-dance beat of the chorus. A good array of songs feature on the album, and it is a must for all those who were growing up at a time when music was evolving with chameleon-like traits. Although this band are today very little known, just ask someone from the era about the title track, and watch the memory of recognition wash over them like the tide sweeping you away for a rendezvous with an old friend. A total must-have for us Eighties Children.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 14 Mar 2006

Having got the original recording of "First Picture of You" on a 80s hits compilation album (and liked it very much) I thought I would buy a Lotus Eaters album. Music Central (Microsoft's short-lived but still excellent Music CD-ROM) highly recommends the band for melodic pop of the best kind - my cup of tea exactly.

What a horrible disappointment then to discover that this appears to be a set of BBC recordings of the kind that bands often did in the 1980s when they had a hit, more-or-less live sessions intended to be played into Radio 1's evening shows. These sessions very often sounded like they were done in a hurry (as indeed they mostly were), and this is no exception.

First they play "First Picture..." but it all sounds a bit flat and at times slightly out of tune - the vocalist does ok but the rest of the band play like they can only just hear each other and aren't quite able to stay in synch. There are indeed some great songs on offer here, but the performances let them down. A fully polished studio album of these songs would be a joy I think.

I just listened to this right through, and now I think I will probably throw it away. It would be shame to come to associate these great songs with these sadly lacking recordings/performances. I'm off to look for a pukka Lotus Eaters album.

4.0 out of 5 stars BBC session at last, 25 Jun 2011

Although ive had this album for some time I do remember a time when the john peel sessions were only available on a grey sleeved vinyl 4 track ep that had in small print all the bands that recorded at the bbc. Strangly enough i never came across one by the lotus eaters.Anyway lucky us here we have it and a lot more than the 4 tracks that they were originally designated for a bbc vinyl release. There are a couple of new tracks that the majority of us would not have heard. There are a few live recordings but sadly the cheering is not enthusiastic as it should be,well sorry ive always been a fan, some accoustic versions of what were designated to b sides and some of the tracks from the no sense of sin album. Most lotus eaters fans would probably already own this but considdering that not much has been recorded by these guys its worth a buy even if its to listen to the great oldies. Mind you supporting a great band isnt such a bad thing it may bring them back for an encore. Thats a hint lads.
