This is a sweet little set with a book and a stand up nativity scene, all packed into a hardback book style box, fastened together with a silky ribbon. As you open it up, there is a paperback book held on the right-hand side and the left-hand side opens up further to reveal the parts of the nativity scene.

The part consist of
1. the stable and the background with plenty of animals
2. Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus standing behind the manger
3. a shepherd, a lamb and two sheep,
4.a trio of wise men bearing gifts
5. a slot-in star and
6. the stable floor

The parts all lay flat in the book/box and are very easy to assemble - there are some instructions showing you how to do this, but in essence, there are some flaps which you bend down just past the horizontal and they form boxes to make each set of figures both stable and 3-dimensional.

My girls particularly liked the star, which is attached to some clear plastic, so that it looks like it is in the sky, unattached to the stable (provided you have a little imagination!)

We haven't really bothered using the stable floor and have just had the scene out on the table and the girls move the parts around whilst we read the story together.

I think this is a lovely set and the story has been kept short and simple, so that no child's attention will be beaten by it. My children are aged 3 and 5 and they love the scene and the story, although because the story is relatively short, it does mean that when we get it out, we tend to read the story 2 or 3 times. I would have liked the book inside to be hardback as well - it would have felt a bit more special.

Beautiful set containing a scene with cut-out characters set against the background of the nativity stable and manger and an illustrated story book. My little boy absolutely loved this and played forever with the set while I read the story.
It all comes within a keepsake tied with a ribbon.
It's the ideal introduction to the nativity subject.

This is a lovely simple nativity set which includes a book about the Nativity story.
There is very little 'build' work needed to put it up, however still gives children sense of achievement.
The pieces are made out of sturdy, shiny cardboard so stand well and are not easily damaged by little fingers.
The designs are lovely and whilst for children they preserve the dignity of the birth of Jesus.
I expect to use this nativity set long after my children have grown.

My First Nativity set comprises a book and a cardboard nativity set. Imagine if you will a Hardback book with an approximate A4 facing, about an inch deep. Open up the ribbon ties on the side and you have the nativity set housed in a a small box on the left and the book (slightly smaller than A4) on your right. The book itself is by Rod Campbell, who you may know as the author of Dear Zoo, It's Mine and the Buster books. It's a pleasant if slightly unremarkable telling of the Nativity Story, but the illustrations are clear and bright and in-keeping with Rod Campbell's usual style. I have to admit my absolute favourite Nativity Book is not strictly a telling of the Nativity - it's The Nativity Play by Nick Butterworth and Mick Inkpen. My 4 year old son and I love that book so much that it even comes out in summer! Back to this product, I thought that the Nativity Set itself was reasonably solid. It's made of cardboard and is clearly not designed as a toy, more as an aid to story telling and something nice to put on a shelf or sideboard during the nativity period - a role which it performs admirably.

My Godson and I loved 'My First Nativity - Book and Nativity Set' it gave us the opportunity to talk and discuss the book, it made the story more interesting for him and kept his attention, it also gave us some family time, the pieces are easy to move and play with. We will put the set away after Christmas until next year, it will now be part of our christmas reading material.

We are weekly mass attendees and, as Christmas drew near I started to fish around for something (other than a colouring book or Hello Kitty stickers) that would hold my pre-schooler's interest through the Christmas services. This was perfect, as you would expect from Rod Campbell, the man behind Dear Zoo. The book itself is a paperback, bright and outlining the story simply and briefly. This was the first year that my daughter had any interest or understanding of Christmas and this was perfect as an illustration of what it's all about. Short enough to read quietly during the mass (if we must!) and she actually took it in to nursery to show her teachers.

The nativity scene is very sturdy. I didn't have high hopes when I ordered it, but amazingly it survived the festive period and made it safely to storage for next year. My daughter very much enjoyed playing with it, even if she didn't necessarily stick to the story... A lovely addition to our Christmas traditions.

Combining an affectionate book telling the story of the birth of Jesus with a durable nativity set ideal for younger readers, this is probably the best Christmas book that any family with young children could ask for.

Bringing the simple visual style of Dear Zoo to the classic Christian story, Rod Campbell makes the fable accessible and easy to understand for even the youngest children.

Whether or not you're religious and choose to believe literally in the story being told this version of the nativity is succinct and heartfelt, a warm representation of an idea that everybody in the UK should at least be familiar with in order to make sense of our seasonal holidays. The packaging is sturdy, the cut-outs chunky enough to last and the whole set packed with character.

I expect My First Nativity set to last exactly as long as my children need it to while they grow, making this a great buy for the Christmas period.
