This book has certainly opened well. It begins like a Young adult novel with two school kids who are great friends decide to make a break from their run of the mill life in a run of the mill small town and head for the big smoke of San Francisco, Las Vegas and from there, who knows? Each has their own problems at home which are mentioned briefly but thankfully, not in any great detail. Your emotions are pulled gently like a soft breeze in Autumn when Axi decides to walk out on her alcoholic father. There is love there, between even those two, but love can't thrive in a one-way street.

The idea for the great escape was first brought up by the girl (Axi) and after a short time spent convincing her (boy) friend - Robinson - of the idea's merits, the two are riding off into the sunset on a stolen Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The story is a delight to read. Mr Patterson's characterisation skills have never been so obvious, and so well put to good use. There is an underlying current of romance (obviously) and heart break between the two main characters. Humour at this stage has a minor role to play. Even the sub characters are interesting and entertaining, even the non-human ones.

Based on past experience of Patterson's novels, the plot is sure to have more twists than the mighty Amazon river. The kids are so likeable that i am almost too scared to keep reading to find out what happens. But just like life itself, this book is full of ups and downs. And to quote a famous cliche, life is a journey, not a destination. This wonderful book co-written by two modern day masters of the written word is therefore a glorious metaphor for life, love, and death, as well as everything that comes in between.

‘First Love’ written by James Patterson and Emily Raymond is a contemporary young adult romance which will be equally enjoyed by older readers who love romantic stories.

The two authors introduce reader to Alexandra Moore and Oscar James Robinson who will meet in the cancer hospital where both of them are recovering from daily doses of chemotherapy. Alexandra or Axi as is her nickname, recently lost her younger sister who died from a serious illness, her mother left their family unable to cope with the multiple tragedies that have befallen them, while her father seeks his solace and escape only in alcohol.

Axi also wants to escape from her miserable life, wants to enjoy her young life even for a while, fearing she will end up sadly like her sister. Therefore she will come up with a plan for cross-country road trip, asking the only person she trusts, her best friend and her secret love – Robinson to come with her. Since the start of their adventures, things will not go as planned but they two will get over the obstacles, one after another, while in process learning a lot about themselves and life…

James Patterson and Emily Raymond created a love story full of adventures this teenage couple experience, which is at the same time fun, sad, inspiring and educational. Axi and Robinson, the two young people who are just on the doorstep of life will make a lot of mistakes, not thinking much about the consequences, just like young people usually do.

What may not be so well known fact to a wider audience is that this story is based partly on actual events from the author's life, one tragic story that marked his youth.

My thanks go to Random House UK, Cornerstone and Net Galley for my copy.

We meet Axi, she is an altogether girl, works hard and studies hard, never in trouble and a perfectly "good Girl" however, she has this deep yearning inside herself where she just wants to pack up and get away from it all.

She is also in love with her best friend.

Robinson.

The thing is, should she tell him and risk loosing his friendship if he doesn't return the feelings? Or should she wait and see and accept what is meant to be?

They both come from dysfunctional families.

Robinson thinks they should just "get away from it all" wherein lies the Bonnie & Clyde type lifestyle.
They are on the run from the Police.

Then things take a turn, and when all is revealed about feelings, you will have to read and find out.

But then something happens which reminds me of Fault in their stars, I saw the Movie and read the book. So although I shouldn't, I can't help seeing the similarity between the two in some of the story with this.

Its an OK book, not James Patterson's usual story kind of reads, but it did work OK

I chose this book as I had read his other novels of the same ilk. This is a beautiful story of love in adversity. It made my smile, laugh and also brought a lump to the throat. Excellent. Would definitely recommend
