I guess that this is seen, by many jazz critics, as the end of Freddie Hubbard's real creative period. I don't necessarily go along with that, Freddie was a brilliant musician who was constantly trying to move forward and who also had his troubles but the music here is rather great, the title track that opens the album is sublime and although I am not always a fan of elaborate romanticised orchestration in jazz i do really like this, Moment To Moment is another stand out track but as with most of the CTI recordings it has a brilliant balance across the whole album. Like Miles Davis the setting changes but Freddies playing always shines out and he is also just playing that horn like he always did

Being a fan of Freddie Hubbard for many years it seems odd that this passed me by. I don't have all his albums and somehow even though I usually liked CTI's output I missed this. Having read the previous review I bought it and love it. At this time orchestral arrangements were in vogue (some of us remember Deep Purple and the RPO) and a lot were on the cheesy side of jazz/lift music. This is totally different Hubbard plays beautifully on this album and the big arrangements are there to enhance rather than water down the performances and never get in the way. Great stars support, Ron Carter, George Benson, Jack DeJohnette, Airto, Hubert Laws, Herbie Hancock etc etc FABULOUS!!!!! Thanks to the previous reviewer.

This is a studio recording which Hubbard himself rated as one of his best, largely because he did not feel the need to blow his socks off!! He does indeed play some lovely, restrained trumpet/flugelhorn,backed by some far-from-intrusive orchestral settings - which includes, what is anathema to some jazz fans, the "dreaded" violin/string ensemble. The tracks which do include such backing are, however, extremely tastefully performed and the strings certainly do not intrude. The studio sets are enlived with contributions from George Benson, and a rhythm section of Ron Carter and Jack Dejohnette. Added to the Creed Taylor studio sessions is a live performance which provides the real nitty gritty jazz combo elements to this excellent CD - you're on your own lads, there's no strings attached - just get on with doing what all jazzmen do best, performing in front of a live audience with no safety net.

Freddie Hubbard on CTI? What an marvellous combination! "First Light" stands up to any of Freddie's other work and I recommend the album without hesitation.
