4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book for beginners/improvers 5 Feb 2008
By Big Bry
I am a beginner and have tried a few different books, but I have to say that this is the best by far (its in GCEA tuning by the way). Very thorough, taking you through how to hold the uke, different strumming and picking methods. It helps you play several different tunes, not only showing you the chords, but also the picks - and it has a CD too. Also has three pages of chords. Don't be scared of buying a used one - I did and only paid a couple of quid and it's as good as new!! Go for it. Recommended.

This book is just brilliant if you are like myself a Uke virgin and just starting out - then this book is the one - and the digital audio disc is exellent as it is not loaded with other backing instruments so you can really pick out what you're looking for - within 2hrs i was banging out a tune that even my wife recognised- amazing !!! the disc will not play on a Cd player though - i just ripped it onto my desk top, i can not praise this book enough and i'm only 3 pages in-

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for beginners 27 Dec 2009
This is a good book for someone who really wants to learn the uke. Mostly it is simple to follow although some of the chords will prove rather difficult for beginners - you need to be a contortionist to play one or two of them ! Having said that, if you work patiently through it this is quite a rewading book. The CD demonstrates how each tune should be played. I would supplement this book by watching video uke lessons on youtube. Lots of good info in this book so I think it is a good buy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best for beginners 18 Aug 2009
Apart from having played a little bass guitar, I started learning Uke with basically no prior musical knowledge. This book was not too bad for me but it could have been made even easier for beginners. I bought the CD version and the book does not say which track to play and when, and the cd does not explain what each track is. Not so bad for three blind mice but not useful when you have never heard the song before in your life, such as with "brown eyes".

It explained picking with thumb and finger on 2 strings, yet the diagram showed 3 strings and no explanation. For me this made little sense and I skipped over some of the stuff because of it.

Maybe the DVD version will be slightly more well rounded as a teaching aid but I personally found free teaching websites that I goggled more intuitive than this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Lessons Ukelele (With CD)........ 12 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Excellent book for anyone wishing to learn the Ukelele. Not too difficult and written well. I would say you can't better the book, especially at the price.

This is quite a good book for basic ukulele players. It takes you through from how to hold a uke, to strumming and picking. However if you're an absolute beginner it can go a bit fast. The tuning section for example. If you're an absolute novice I'd suggest a website like Uke School. However once you get on a little, the book comes into its own.

Another problem is that many of the songs the book uses as examples seem to be ones you'd be more familiar with if you were American - "Beautiful Brown Eyes" and "Stars and Stripes Forever" for example. If you're learning, then having to listen to the CD to find out what the practice track actually sounds like before you do your uke exercises is a bit annoying.

My last critisism is that some of the finger positions the book gives in the chord charts are difficult if you're a child or (like me) have small hands. There are easier ways of getting an E major chord than the one they give in the book (the website "Ukulele Boogaloo" do quite a good one as an alternate).

Saying that, this book is better than a lot of other beginners ukulele books. It gets you up and running quite quickly. However supplementing it with learning material from some uke websites will get you going a lot quicker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good starter book 26 Aug 2010
By Paulos
A good introduction to the Ukulele. It gets you up and running in no time. Cannot really fault it, only that I expected more from the CD - otherwise I would have given it 5 stars. Either way I think its a must for a newcomer like myself to the Ukulele.

2.0 out of 5 stars It does get easier.
In my opinion, this book has been written by someone who seems to have forgotten what it was like to be a complete beginner (like me - I have had my uke for 5 weeks now). Read more
