This album, when I first heard it, comsumed me completely; it awoke in me a feeling of awe, a feeling that I had never experienced before and expect never to feel again. This album is, in so many ways, unique; the only album the "True" Sisters Of Mercy released, the only album that contains the brilliant guitar team of Gary Marx and Wayne Hussey, carried by Craig Adams' powerful bass and, of course, the cold, harsh voice of Andrew Eldrich and the constant passionless pulse of Doktor Avalanche. This album stirs thew soul, it is the embodiment of that time when music had reached a new plateau; so nilhistic, so cruel and yet it is an epiphany, a self realisation. The title track begins with tinny guitar accomaniment, which is then picked up and carried by Adams' rich, deep bass chords before, finally, the voice of the venerable Doktor brings forth Eldrich, the death of love and the promise of only failure and accepance of defeat. No Time To Cry takes from us what hope we may have once held onto, A Rock And A Hard Place shows us the worth of love and life and Marian sings of lost love and love unfulfilled. This album, is so cold and devoid of passion; it is still one of the most powerful albums ever released and I dare anyone to listen to this and not be moved by it. AND THEY ONLY GAVE ME FIVE STARS TO VOTE WITH!!!

I only discovered 'goth' music properly a couple of years ago at uni, but was aware of the Sisters for a number of years. The first album I bought by this band was 'A Slight Case Of Overbombing' owing to the fact that I liked 'Under the gun' and 'Temple of love' plus recommendations from friends. However, the tracks from this album affected me most. After hearing it in its entirety I can simply say that it is absolutely amazing. Every song is smooth, dark and atmospheric - stand out tracks would have to be the gothic dream of drowning in love, 'Marian' and the paranoia of 'Walk Away' which has fantastic clanging guitar work. From this period I think only 'Night Time' by Killing Joke is able to measure up. This music could not he made today without sounding premeditated. SHakeshakeshake....

This is easily one of my top three favourite albums of all time. And since it would be difficult for me to name the other two right away it's probably fair to say that this Sisters album is the one I would keep if I had to destroy all my other records, CDs, tapes, etc.
While the music on First and Last and Always does remind me of the days of my youth quite a bit, I also find it to be absolutely timeless. Everytime I listen to it, from the ominious opening chords of Black Planet to the fade of the overwhelming Some Kind of Stranger, it grips me and takes me on a journey, just as if I were listening to it for the first time.
For me, this album is one of the most passionate pieces of music I know and will ever know.
