Book Description

7 Dec 2006

The beautiful young widow of the President of the United States thought she was free of the White House, but circumstances have forced her back into the role of the First Lady. Not for long, however, because Cornelia Litchfield Case has made up her mind to escape - if only for a few days - so she can experience an ordinary life. All she needs is the perfect disguise... and she's just found it.

Journalist Mat Jorik is a pushover for females in trouble. He's already agreed to ferry his late ex-wife's daughters across the country when he takes pity on a pretty hitchhiker. He offers her a ride in return for her care of the baby and teenager. Cornelia accepts his offer, little realising that she's about to lose her heart to two kids and a not-so-perfect stranger. Only the Secret Service is hot on her trail and it's just a matter of time before Mat discovers that the woman he thinks he's rescued is actually the scoop of a lifetime...

Widow of a US president escapes the duties of the White House. She meets up with Mat, a confirmed bachelor, who is travelling in a camper with two young girls, planning on dropping the girls off at their grandmother's. But nothing goes according to his plans...... Lovely story, witty and endearing characters. Could not stop reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars First Lady 4 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
I don't usually feel the need to write reviews but I felt the need to redress the balance of the negative remarks that appear on amazon. SEP writes screwball comedy romances that hollywood vainly strives to recreate on film, but fails miserably. I have read the full cannon of SEP books many times and 'First Lady' is up there with the best. A beautifully crafted book, filled with characters that you just love and a central romance that presses all the right buttons, this is a lovely read.
This is pure escapist fun that will make you laugh and cry at the same time. It has got it all, snotty teenager, adorable baby, feisty heroine and a hero embarking on a journey of self dicovery, all travelly together in a rusty old RV on a trip across middle America. What's not to love?
Go on spoil yourself, this is SEP at her best. Enjoy!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable light hearted read 14 July 2009
By B. Cook
Format:Paperback
I don't understand the negative reviews this book has, i found it a typical SEP light romantic comedy with a cast of engaging characters, the widowed first lady travels around the countryside incognito in a beat up camper van with a sexy, macho, reluctant hero, a calculating, defensive teenager and cute little baby. Whats not to like? This is not professing to be great literature or even realistic its just a funny, entertaining read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very uninteresting 18 May 2004
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I'm a genuine SEP fan, but this, along with "Kiss an angel", is not a good read.. The characters are shallow and their romance is not very passionate. Quite boring, pick up "It had to be you" or the new "Ain't she sweet" instead!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing book 14 Sep 2000

Format:Mass Market Paperback
I am a big SEP fan, I have read all of her books, and this one was a big let down. Usually her characters grab you right away, not this time.
