Book Description

"First Journey: After the Shut Down" is the third in W. R. Flynn's series of novels depicting life in the small surviving Corbett, Oregon, colony following the abrupt catastrophic worldwide collapse of civilization. It is set mid-winter during the fourth year of Corbett's struggle to survive intact under conditions both radically changed and unforeseen. The community sends a small group on an exploratory journey into the ruins of Portland, Oregon. On the outskirts of downtown they encounter a well-armed band of men led by a Marine, Jeff Cowley. They are members of a collection of families who distrust and fear strangers. They have survived the collapse of civilization by learning basic new skills and defending themselves with deadly force.

The three novels in this adventure series, "Shut Down," "Buck," and "First Journey," will appeal to readers of all ages. Book IV, "Stone Warriors," will be released this August.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good continuation....but slow 7 Jan. 2013
Chances are you are reading this review having read the previous 2 books like I did, despite the first negative review I bought it on the strength of the first two.

I thought the author linked in well with what happened in the previous books (it had been a while since I read them so it was good the way he weaved it slight refreshers now and again), I have come to trust the author that he can make the characters and the world around them come alive and I was not disappointed.

Yes...the story is slow but seeing the stories place in the overall series so far I can forgive that, I for one will be buying the next in the series.....please not to long Mr Author!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Corbett reaches out and overcomes a paralyzing fear. 10 Jan. 2013
By Eitenne the Reader - Published on
Third installment in a series started with "Shut Down" the latest tale tells the story of reaching out to other survivors.

Exploring that post survival normalcy is the second part of the theme.

The book is somewhat metaphysical in it explores overcoming a limiting fear of the unknown, and a return to core values driven moralities. There are losses and real issues to that Corbett-folk need to learn to deal with.

Good read - a bit lighter tones that "Shut Down" or "Buck" yet a fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 3rd book in the series! 29 Jan. 2013

Nice to see that not every colony will be killers and murderers in what I fear, is our near future. The strength of those who venture out to search is what will make survivors. Clapper is amongst these, even though he paid with his life for the continuation of the colony.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read 27 Mar. 2013

I have read all three book in the series ( I hope there are more on the way ) and have enjoyed them all. Where the first two books take place right after the crash this one takes place four years later where the population has moved away from cities or died.
This book is more about long term survival and working together than about defending against the bad guys who are only there to take what you have in every sense.

As someone who grew up in Corbett it is fun to read about places I know and I have even recognized a few last names in the books of people who actually live in the area.

Suggestion for the author: there are three additional ways to get into Corbett that are not in the book....Alex Barr Rd near Latourell Falls up to Haines Rd, Palmer Mill Rd near Bridal Veil up to Brower Rd both on Larch Mountain and Bull Run Rd NE of Sandy across the Sandy river and up to the Trout Creek area.
