Product Description

Since the 1930's Arsenal FC has been a name ranked amongst the most distinguished in the sport, and the club's achievements over recent decades have made this great football institution a brand name that is recognised on a planetary scale. In this book, the renowned sports biographer and historian Brian Belton meticulously pieces together the story of the initial, crucial decades of the club together, in a way that transports his readers back to a time and place very different from where the Gunners find themselves today. From the works team known as Dial Squire to the new dawn of Highbury, 27 years later, Belton charts the foundation of a football phenomenon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sadly, very poorly researched, 19 May 2011
This review is from: The First Gunners - Arsenal, From Plumstead to Highbury: 1 (Paperback)
It's not worth buying this book as all that Belton (a West Ham fan) has done is re-hash the same wrong stories told in all previous Arsenal histories.

Much of what has been written about Arsenal's early history is actually wrong. Since 1905 people have been writing books about Arsenal without carrying out any original research so these stories have become folklore. Even the club's official website is wrong!

Arsenal was not ostracised by clubs from the south of England after turning professional.

They weren't elected into the Football League to make up the numbers when Bootle and Accrington dropped out at the last minute

The club didn't change its name to Woolwich Arsenal in 1891 when it turned professional

Sam Hollis and George Elcoat never managed Arsenal

The original Southern League didn't fall apart due to threats from the London FA against the other clubs
