Review

The best debut novel I've read in years! Hilarious and heart-felt, sexy and surprising, this paranormal has it all: a heroine you want to be best friends with, a mysterious dark hero and a twist at the end that'll knock your socks off. An absolute must read - I'm already begging for the next one! (Publishers Weekly)

The UF genre just got a major infusion of humour and sass in the form of PI Charley Davidson (aka the Grim Reaper). Jones makes a truly memorable debut (Romantic Times)

First Grave on the Right is smart, sharp and wickedly entertaining. Grab this one (Jayne Ann Krentz)

4.0 out of 5 stars "Better to see the dead than be dead" 11 Feb 2011
By sharon
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a very good debut & I enjoyed it alot, it did keep my interest, but she knows how to tease & tantilize throughout.
Written in the first person our protagonist is a 27 year old grim reaper, she leads dead people to the light, but it gets a bit tricky when the dead have been murdered or time cut short, they need closure & to be heard. She works as a consultant to the police & her uncle who is lead detective has no qualms about using a little inside information.
When there is a triple murder, she's called in to help. Ghosts aplenty & the constant reminder she's not 'normal', I found Charley a likeable character, witty, sarcastic, a huge chip on her shoulder, cynical & a world weary attitude where she cares more for the dead than the living. Her inner dialogue and thought processes made it entertaining with her unique prospective on the world & the dead. Heart wrenching, funny, Reyes is sexy as hell - the premise & plot are full, characters well rounded, I have ordered the next book in the series Second Grave on the Left.
If you like Chole Neil (Chicagolands), Kalayna Price (Grave Series) & those of that ilk give it a go. It's more plot than romance, but both are pretty intense.
Really enjoyed it & ready to read the next book..

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read series. 22 May 2012
By SuzyP
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I came across this series accidentally and I am really so pleased I did. I cannot actually praise the books enough - I am glad I came to the series after it had been completely written - waiting for each book would have been painful. Each book is individually brilliant. The main character is likeable and witty and creates many genuine laugh out loud moments. I found the story to be well written and the addition of the chapter titles is very clever - the little touches like this make the difference between a good author and a really good author. The story is dark and can be sexual and violent at times - so not suited to the younger readers. I would certainly recommend these books and feel slightly bereft now that I have finished.

Ever since she was born Charley Davidson has been a grim reaper, helping the souls of the unlawfully killed move on to the afterlife. Charley uses her ability to aid her professional life by working as a PI and a consultant to the local PD - where she regularly helps her Uncle Bob, a detective, to solve crimes.

FIRST GRAVE ON THE RIGHT starts with a dead lawyer turning up in Charley's apartment, asking for help. However when Charley does a bit of digging to help the murdered man seek answers and closure, she stumbles across the ghosts of two of his colleagues, who have also just been murdered.

It seems the lawyers were working a case for a prisoner; the young man in question has been convicted of murdering a boy and, as he is missing, for the suspected murder of his teenage nephew. But the lawyers and Charley can see that the man has been framed. The murders of the lawyers are most likely connected to this case, so Charley and her uncle are going to have to follow the path created by the lawyers deaths, and find out who is responsible for the death and disappearance of the children, which in turn will lead to the killer(s) of the three lawyers.

As she helps the three ghosts and the wrongly imprisoned man, Charley comes across a guy she met when she was fifteen. It was a brief crossing of paths, but she could sense that Rayse wasn't a regular human either, so she is thrilled that she has found him again. However there are two slight problems to overcome before we have a happy reunion; Rayse is now in prison - for murder. AND he is in a coma, following a prison brawl.

Is Charley prepared to dig around Rayse's past to try and help his situation somehow? Will she likes what she finds if she does?

4.0 out of 5 stars A great first book 5 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
First Grave On The Right is the debut novel written by Darynda Jones and tells the story of Charlotte Davidson or as she is known Charley. Since the day she was born Charley has been the grim reaper, and for those ghosts who are ready to go to the other side they can pass through Charley. However there are some ghosts who aren't ready to pass through and they want Charley to help them find peace or in some cases their murderer so that they can go to the light. Charley also works as a PI and a consultant to the local PD helping her Uncle Bob who is a detective to solve crimes by talking to the dead.

I am so happy I finally got around to reading this book. Friends have been saying it is really good but you know how it is and that tbr pile is so huge. Anyway I did read it and I really thoroughly enjoyed it. First Grave On The Right is fast paced with fantastic characters. Charley is very funny and snarky, the book is full of witty one liners. I must admit there were some times when I wished Ms Jones had turned the joking down a bit but all in all it did make me laugh. There is also some love interest in the story with the hot mysterious and totally gorgeous Reyes and there also appears to be the possibility of romance with Garrett another PI who works with Charley's Uncle, so we shall see how that plays out. This book sets up Charley's world for the forthcoming books and we learn lots of interesting bits about Charley some of which Charley finds out along with us too. They are great teasers that make me want to continue the series. I am going to give First Grave On The Right 4 stars.

I so wanted to like this book as it was a publisher gift, unfortunately I found the attempt at constant humour irritating. The premise is unusual but it was not a read I enjoyed.
