First of the Gang to Die is easily the best Morrissey single in years - catchy, great lyrics, great chorus and easily the best song on You Are the Quarry, the only mystery is why this wasn't the first single from the album...
Teenage Dad On His Estate initially seems like a rather throwaway B-Side, but the track is a grower, and Morrissey's phrasing at the end when sings about the 'boy with the methadone' give the track a boost.
Mexico was one of 4 new songs first performed live in 2002 (the other 3 all appear on You Are The Quarry), and the live version is fantastic, which made it's non appearance on the album a bit of a mystery - until you hear the version recorded here. The production on this number is simply awful, as the main guitar lines have been stripped out leaving a fragile ballad that sounds as though it came off of Kill Uncle. As with Jack the Ripper, the definitive version is the live version - this is still a pleasant track with some great lyrics, but a real disappointment to anyone already familiar with the song.
NB PLEASE NOTE that this is a DVD - NOT a CD with bonus DVD content, as is the norm. The downside is this (obviously) wont play through your CD player, so unless you want to listen to the audio tracks sat in front of the TV you'll need to burn a copy of the B-Sides onto a CD-R. The upside is you get a photo gallery (nice, but not very large) and a live video of the A-Side recorded at the 2004 Manchester gig - this is excellent quality and we can only hope that it's a teaser for a full length DVD release of this concert.
