5.0 out of 5 stars 9 Favourite tales under one cover, 15 Oct 2008
By ABCeDar - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
retold by Margaret Mayo.

From inside cover:-

'Sharing the magic of fairy tales with very young children is great fun. These wonderful stories, told and retold for hundreds of years, are a rich part of our heritage.
Here are some of my favourites - and probably everyone else`s too.....
.... I have enjoyed sharing these first fairy tales with many children - as a mother, a teacher and now a grandmother. And they still remain for me as fresh and satisfying as ever.
Happy story times!
Margaret Mayo'

So..... impeccable credentials for compiling this super selection!

Paperback covers open to 96 high quality shiny pages largely in the popular 2-page spread format, split over 9 stories:-

Jack and the Beanstalk
Puss in Boots
The Sleeping Beauty
The Princess and the Pea
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Hansel and Gretel
The Frog Prince
Rumpelstiltskin
Cinderella

Numbered pages.
A useful guide to the reading time is given on each story.
Colourfully illustrated throughout, with clear, easy-to-read text........enhanced in places, FOR EFFECT!

Example of text, from Jack and the Beanstalk, with a reading time guide of six minutes:-

'Once upon a time, there was a boy called Jack, and he lived with his mother in a little house in the country.
They were poor and didn't have much of anything.
But they did have a cow. Her name was Milky-White.
One day, when there was no money left to buy any food, Jack's mother told him to take Milky-White to market and sell her. So off he went with the cow.
On the way, Jack saw an old man walking down the road, holding his hat very carefully in both hands.
"Hello!" said the old man. "And where are you going this sunshiny day?"
"I'm going to market to sell our cow."
"That's where I'm going," said the old man.
"I want to sell these five beans I've got in my hat. They are MAGIC BEANS! If you plant them, they'll grow up to the sky and then you can climb up and get all the treasure that's up there!"
"Oh, I'd like to do that!" said Jack.
"Well," said the old man, "let's swap your cow for my beans!".........'

To which Jack agrees.........but his mother is not so impressed with the deal - giving up their cow for FIVE MAGIC BEANS........and Jack is sent to bed!

Super read-to-me book which would make an ideal Christmas present!

5.0 out of 5 stars My 4 year old loves this book, and I love to read it to her!, 8 Nov 2000
By A Customer
These are all the classic fairy tales, delightfully interpreted for small children! The stories are well-written to inspire the dramatic flair, voices, and sound effects that make the characters come alive. The pictures accompany the stories beautifully, and there's not a frown in the lot. Parents that worry about the violence and sorrow in Grimm's original tales will be pleased at the positive telling of these classic tales.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bowdlerised, twee retelling, 25 Sep 2009
By Mr. A. F. Wilson "luminosity" (Derby, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
All the drama and depth of these stories have been removed leaving a shallow, saccharine retelling that ultimately disappoints. Fairy tales are important parts of childrens' development and these watery versions deny children the richness and drama of the originals. Disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to fairy tales.
I bought this book for my 3 year old and she loved it. There was just enough detail in the stories to inspire her imagination "I want to be her..." without her getting bored. Read more
