Review

'Lari Don, a Leith-based professional storyteller, took the younger reader award with a tale of her own... It beat Eleventh Orphan from Joan Lingard who is regarded as the dowager queen of children's books in Scotland.' --Anne Johnstone, The Herald 'This is an enjoyable fast-paced yarn ... The diverse characters and exciting storyline will enthrall readers who like animals and magic.' -- BookFest 2008 Recommended Reading Guide 'Strong characterisation, wry humour and Helen's robustly practical attitude to the fabled creatures she encounters add up to a refreshingly different quest tale.' -- The Scotsman, Spring Books Review 'Lari Don is the next big thing in the world of children's books.' -- The Five Thirty Show, STV 'This book was fantastic. A wonderful fantasy story with lots of unexpected twists and turns, and fairy laws making things overcomplicated. I would recommend this to anyone in their early teens who likes a good fantasy.' -- Eleanor Williams, from Boroughmuir High School, writing for Teen Titles magazine 'It is a world where anything can happen - where centaurs roam, dragons fly and evil enemies must be defeated.' -- Linda Summerhayes, The Edinburgh Evening News 'I'm not quite sure what age group this is aimed at (probably young teenagers), but take my word for it, grandmothers will love it too! ... Sometimes comic, sometimes sad, but always full of excitement.' -- Stewart Peterson, The Greenock Telegraph 'This fantasy adventure story moves along at a fast pace and the introduction of traditional folklore into a modern setting works well thanks to a range of appealing characters grounded by down to earth, practical Helen. The author, a professional storyteller, and the publishing company are both Scottish and the setting of present day Scotland perfectly complements a story with folkloric elements. This book should appeal to those 8+ fans of fairy and animal stories who are ready to move on from series reading to something more substantial. The passing reference to those English fairies who only want to work with rainbows will make some readers smile.' -- Sue Roe, The School Librarian 'I really enjoyed the book overall and I believe that it would be a great book for older kids 10+ to read, but I also think it would be a good aloud book perfect for bedtime ... I liked the sense of adventure and I love how the author wove scottish folklore into the story and made it accessible for younger readers/listeners ... this was a well written book that I would recommend parents to buy.' -- Turning the Pages blog 'First Aid for Fairies is appealing on a number of levels. It is a fantasy adventure but introduces young readers to traditional Scottish mythological characters, and explores some of the Scottish countryside as well. And while Helen is surrounded by creatures of magic, she herself is solidly grounded in science and reality, heals based on the advice from books, and is usually the voice of reason and good sense. She's a good character for her young readers to relate to, because the choices she makes are so well-considered, and every decision comes with a lesson/consequence that isn't so heavy-handed that it will be ignored. On the publisher's website, the book is considered to be an 8-12 reader; but there is no reason to limit readership to an age-group. Consumers of good vs evil quest-style fairy tale and fantasy will find the unexpected on every page, and love this book regardless of age.' -- Novelspot 'The story is both an interesting and informative one ... Young readers will be absorbed in the adventure, and they may just learn a thing or two about real friendship.' -- Indie Reader Houston blog

Product Description

Helen has absolutely no interest in becoming a vet like her mother. So she isn't best pleased when asked to help an injured horse. Only this horse isn't entirely normal ...and nor are his friends. Without warning, Helen is thrust into an extraordinary world full of magical rituals, fantastical creatures and a dangerous, powerful beast known as the Master, who would destroy it all. Everything hinges on finding the lost Book of Wisdom before the Winter Solstice. Can Helen work out the riddles and help her new friends to make amends for a foolish prank? This is a wonderful mixture of fable and fiction, woven together into an exciting race through Scotland's diverse landscapes, accompanied by an array of creatures from mythology and folklore.

great adventure book 16 Nov 2010
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
I am aged 8. This book is a great book for ages 7 to 10 boys and girls. Once i started reading it i couldn't stop and now i'm eager to read the next book. I loved the selie character called Rona, who was great at solving the riddles. I didn't like the minator called The Master of the Maze. He stopped them getting their clues before the winter solstice. it is quite a big book and I read a bit each day and it took 2 weeks. At the end it also gives you the start of the next book to follow called Wolfnotes and other musical mishaps.

From Grannie Miller. 13 April 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A rattling good yarn, sparely and cleanly written. Will read aloud well too.
As a grannie I particularly liked that fears, wounds, and disappointments weren't mendaciously smoothed out but validated, and that the fact that choices and actions always have consequences is very gently but firmly made. Children will love this book because, although set in a fantasy scenario, it is about the real world which they are desperate to understand.
The historical and geographical facts are spot on and showcase the real Scotand.
And it s hugely entertaining!
More, please, Lari?

Helen is a gifted young violinist who does not wish to follow into her Mothers shoes as a Vet however, when an injured Centaur appears in her kitchen one night she has no choice but to try and patch him up.

It turns out that the Centaur, Yann and his friends Lavender the flower fairy and Rona the Selkie, have done something incredibly stupid with a book of power.............and now Midsummers Night is fast approaching and they have to try and get the book back before thier parents find out they have lost it. Helen manages to get herself sucked into their adventures and turns out to be really helpful to them both as a 'healer and a bard' and also good at solving riddles. Their quest to get the book back begins and what a quest it turns out to be. Initally Yann the Centaur doesn't trust Helen nor indeed any human for that matter but as the story progresses he finds himself grudgingly accepting that Helen is indeed a help not a hindrance.

There are many creatures from Mythology mentioned in this lovely book many of whom children will have heard of. I am no child but I have to say that I found this book so enjoyable that I read it all in one go.

Very highly recommended for children and adults!
