3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but unfinished, 28 Dec 2006

Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
There are very few WW1 flight sims on the market, and this is undoubtedly the best of the bunch. I've played it through, and enjoyed it, but it very much gives the impression of having been rushed out to meet a deadline. Third Wire claim that there will be supplements, future releases giving more aircraft, and different campaigns, maybe different fronts, and I think such add-ons are essential. There are only three aircraft to fly, and while they all handle distinctly differently, this isn't a large enough spread. How about some two seaters, the big boys even, Gothas and the Vickers Vimy? The game only covers the war from America's entry, which is fair enough from an American developer but limits the gameplay. The campaigns are short- maybe eight missions or so, reflecting the short period covered by the game itself, but still not great. There are obsolete elements left in from previous Third Wire games, such as the radio communication menu that is appropriate to 1960s air combat, but not to this. Sure, it doesn't work, but it's still possible to bring up the menus, which is just sloppy development. Also, there's no manual insert with the game- laziness again, considering the limited flight controls and options on a Great War aircraft. AI is frequently passive, with enemies flying straight and level while you bob around behind them shooting them slowly to bits. The game refers to the RAF throughout, when it should be teh Royal Flying Corps, and there's a bug whereby sometimes your kills don't crash, but stay at 5 metres above teh ground, spinning in circles on a wingtip. Having said all of that, it's worth buying. It's not expensive, it's not too system hungry, and there's a lot of charm in whizzing about in fragile wood and doped linen planes, twisting and turning fifty feet above No Man's Land hoping for that lucky shot. What it needs are patches, expansions, and a good user community- it deserves that much, and will be a very good game when all of those come together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! A decent WW1 flight sim, 15 Nov 2006
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
First Eagles is one of the best dogfighting games I've played in ages. Whilst comparisons to Red Baron are bound to be made, the game is a decent competitor to take the crown as the WW1 flight sim for the next gen PC flight simmer.

The gameplay is smooth, fast and historically accurate without being overly complex as to deter the mosre casual players. Strafing tanks in an SE5 being a highlight that never gets old and the air to air dogfights are stuff of legend!

I'm no modder, but it looks like the game supports the architecture of new units and campaigns quite heavily. I'm looking forward to seeing what the community can do with new campaigns and scenarios.

If you're looking for some great historical combat, then First Eagles would be a decent addition to any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars very atmospheric, 12 Dec 2006
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
whilst this simulation doesn't try too hard to impress or to please..it does managage to do both with ease.. it doesn't have the uncomparable detailing of the classic Red Baron series, BUT what it does have more than satisfies and where it is streets ahead of not only RB but most other combat flight sims is in the AI capabilities..no "lawn darts" a lot of combat tends to end up at very very low level and the AI handles this without any issues at all.. making forced but controlled landings when damaged if possible..so you can fly over your downed adversary and waggle your wings in true hollywood style if you wish..

the aircraft are very precisely modelled and whilst not being "next gen" are pretty much spot on...one could get argumentative about flight characteristics but the very fact that one can gives the game away it is a detailed flight simulation and very capable of further modification and addition..for me the stock flight characteristics feel wonderfully accurate and pose a challenge at least the equal of any other comparable combat flight sim...the combat maneveurs are believable and require effort and thought..dogfights can become quite prolonged and demanding..and most of all addictive...(and fun... shh not supposed to mention that word lol)

the graphics are pleasant and appealing and run excellently on any recent computer ..the sim is a small install at 500mb runs as stock without the cd in the drive and gives good value for money..with the potentail for additional add-ons becoming available and the ability to alter the campaigns with simple text edits to your hearts content..

yup wax down your moustache polish your goggles find the silk scarf..home sweet home..
