1.0 out of 5 stars A New Definiton of Badness 11 Oct 2004
By LizardWizard - Published on Amazon.com
Pardon my somewhat ranty tone, but I must say this dog has set new standards of extremely uncreative writing erroneously packaged and sold as "fantasy".

The most irritating elements of this opus are:

-The cheesiest EVER portrayal of Christianity in a fantasy book. And yes, citing an old joke about Adam and his two incredible organs was really lame.

-Rampant ethical relativism. Almost all of the book's characters (including the orcs) are murderous, blood-craving bigots. The author's attempt to set the orcs' values as a sort of ethical standard is a real failure.

-An unbelievably cliched, almost caricatural female villain reminiscent of The Fifth Sorceress' worst pages.

-An overall impression of being highly derivative, with only one arguably innovative feature (orcs-as-good-guys).

In a nutshell, Orcs demonstrates how low can modern fantasy fall.

4.0 out of 5 stars good quick read. 21 May 2004
By JaK - Published on Amazon.com
this book is definatly good different book. A collection of three paperbacks, i never read or even heard of it until i got the collection at SFBC.com. The story is definatly engaging. and thought provoking. Fights, blood guts, swordplay and wry humor its all there. After all, its about orcs. you can see the cliffhanger at the end of the first 2 parts. Even enough detailed description to realize what it would look like on the screen. Only downfall: as someone mention in another post. you are thrown in the middle of a story, though you grow to like the characters. and by the end everything is concluded the wrapping is a little too nice and too convenient. not that he tried to get it over with and finish the story. just leaves you hanging with the thought is that it?
definatly suggest reading it. hell buy it. if you like orcs and wizards and fantasy worlds this book will not do you wrong. maybe not as engaging as tolkien, or jordan or goodkind. but for what it is, it is a damn good story.
