Product Description

One war waged against one man: RAMBO

First came the man: a young wanderer in a fatigue coat and long hair. Then came the legend, as John Rambo sprang from the pages of FIRST BLOOD to take his place on the world's cultural landscape.

This remarkable novel pits a young, disillusioned and ragged Vietnam veteran against a small-town cop who has no idea whom he is dealing with - or how far Rambo will take him into a life-and-death struggle through the woods, hills and caves of rural Kentucky.

From best-selling author David Morrell, this is the critically acclaimed thriller that launched the cultural phenomenon, Rambo. If you know Rambo only from the films, be prepared to be amazed.

After being recommended to me, I approached First Blood with the caution borne of my experience of the Sylvester Stallone films, which I did not enjoy. As the preface to this edition points out, however, it is not just the ending that is different from the films. This is a great novel - it stayed with me for weeks after reading it, marvelling at complexity of the novel despite the relative simplicity of the plot. The two main characters, Rambo and Teasle, are fantastically realised and the pace throughout makes this a real page turner.

A must-read for all fans of thrillers - if only for a change from the usual lack of character development.

The movie only focuses on Rambo's struggle and does it in typical the Hollywood style which makes it, not predictable but unsatisfying. The book however is a show down between to war veterans. Teasle is shown as an equal adversary to Rambo rather than the bad guy. Therefore, sympathies can be divided (I still ended up rooting Rambo though).

In the book, the whole plot is easily more believeable, the back story and therefore Rambo's and Teasle's motives are better explained. The movie had sacrifice some elements of the narrative to make it "film friendly". The book doesn't have to sacrifice anything. And it is still fairly easy to read so anyone can read it, from teenagers to adults.

Overall, I recommend this book for people who liked the movie and want to discover Rambo's roots and those who were dissapointed with the movie and want have the Rambo experience the way it was meant to be. It is not corney or cliché in the way that the film was. Not that the film was truly bad or anything. The book just fills in the gaps the movie left out. And does a better job the bits left in as well.

Page Turner 26 July 2010

I read this book just the other day, and as it happens, watched the film days later as well so I'm feeling kinda Rambo'd out at the moment.

This book for me was thrilling, it really is a page turner. The whole book has a really nice pace too it. It starts off a bit slower, giving you a chance to identify the characters and their driving forces but once the action kicks off there is no stopping it. I certainly can't understand how anyone could think there was too much time wasted on "setting suns" or the like. The two main characters of Rambo and Teasle are both expertly drawn by Morrell and their story shines because of it, because this story really is about how things get out of hand before you know it and get to a point where there just is no turning back or stopping. It's about 2 men, neither of which are willing to back down and that's why I loved this book so much. Under the obvious themes and story there is depth and intelligence. I really enjoyed the way that Morrell never makes Rambo out to be the hero or Teasle the enemy and in lots of ways the book encourages you to see the story from both points of view, giving you the reader a very balanced experience.

I personally thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. As far as comaprisons go of the book and the film, there isn't one. The book is king as usual.
