We first meet Alex on a night out with her best friend Carrie to get over leaving her cheating boyfriend. One encounter with a supernatural werewolf/vampire hybrid called a Varcolac leaves Alex infected and Carrie dead. Human females are not supposed to turn into Varcolacs and when Alex does she becomes the only female of the species and the hope for reviving the race, too bad they're not a race you want to carry on.

Nathan saves Alex that night and takes her home where he, his father and brother nurse her to health and help her to deal with her changes as well as her grief over losing her previous life and loves.

I found Alex to be a very likable character, the author managed to write her emotional state convincingly without reaching the point where the reader thinks `oh no, not more tears'. She is feisty and a true survivor even prior the opening of this story.

The story was an interesting twist on the vampire/werewolf stories around so much now and although the romance is more a when will they rather than a will they, wont they scenario it's still nicely done. Nice also to see a male character with the more or less stable family (although I sense some maternal revelations to come in later books maybe)

Prepare yourself for an emotional ending and be glad that book 2 is already out because you will not want to wait for it

Whilst walking home after drowning her sorrows with her best friend Carrie, Alexandra Jones takes a phone call from her cheating ex-boyfriend. In her anger, she hurls her phone into the forest before her. When she goes to retrieve it, Alex and Carrie come face to face with a monster. He's a Vârcolac (a nightmarish vampire-werewolf hybrid), looking for fresh blood.
The next thing she knows, Alex is staring at the face of an impossibly handsome and mysterious man. Nathan helps Alex to recover, but not back to the life she knew before. Can Alex, being the only female Vârcolac, escape from being used by the other Vârcolac's for breeding purposes? Will Alex and Nathan be able to be together?

I loved this story! It has an originality to it. For a start, it's set in England. Most stories I've read recently are set in America. Samantha Towle has written a wonderful story. Alexandra is completely terrified to find out what she has become. I could feel her depression as she tries to come to terms with the death of her friend. Nathan is a great male character. He has a strong personality that all alpha males should have. Being a shape-shifter helps too! As this is a series, this first book deals with Alex's attack and subsequent transformation. There were moments in this story that touched me deeply, and I had to resort to using tissues. The ending was poignant and left me wanting to know what Alex was planning to do next! A word of warning: This book contains strong language and, as such, I don't recommend this book for younger readers. However, if you are looking for a great story to read, I highly recommend you read this one. I'm now looking forward to reading the remaining books in this series.

MY REVIEW
I liked the cover and initially thought oh its going to be a vampire novel, Oh Wow! I knew it would be good as I read Samantha's other book The Bringer and I loved that one. This book was much much more than a vampire story. Alex is bitten by a Várcolac, which is a vampire-werewolf hybrid.....the thing is women don't usually survive.....well....Alex does! Which means that she is very valuable to the Varcolac who obviously wish to reproduce! Alex was "Lucky" to be rescued by the gorgeous *swoon* Nathan. Nathan, his father Jack and younger brother Sol *swoons more for Sol* nurse her back to health and offer her protection.
Alex has lots of things to over come such as the fact her best friend/more like a sister Carrie was killed by the Várcolac , Alex also has to come to terms with the fact she can never return to her family or friends again, as she would put them in danger with the Várcolacs. alex also has to learn to accept certain traits and "talents" she now has such as she has to drink blood......sure its animal blood that the gorgeous Nathan brings her regularly but its still blood! Alex also has improved hearing, sight and strength too. Alex also finds her self attracted to Nathan, even though he seems to resent her presence and at times hate her too, even though he is the one that saved her. Alex also knows that there is something different about Jack, Nathan, and Sol, it turns out that they are shifters.
I really don't want to go into the plot and spoil the book for anyone but I will say that Alex ends up being sold out to the enemy which causes another great loss of life to happen just when she is beginning to believe that she can cope and live with what life has thrown at her.

I started this book yesterday afternoon and finished reading it just now. This book is sooo sad, poor Alex and Nathan. This is such a good book; I could not put this book down. The storyline is so great, you easily get sucked up into the story, it's like you right there, and it's so easy to get into. It's the first time I've read any of Samantha's Towel's books. This is a great start. Now for the second part to this story 'Original Sin' to see what happens next.
