This disc (their first album, padded out with quite a few bonus tracks, although--puzzlingly--their collaboration with Gary Walker of the Walker Brothers is absent) largely demonstrates the above. The songs aren't bad, exactly; they just aren't particularly interesting, and if they stick in your head, you're usually not the better for this (the odd, swooping "O.K." is particularly guilty of this). "Chu Chu Chu" and "Give Me Loving" show up on the far better (and far cheaper) compilation "G.S. I Love You, Too" and give the listener a pretty good idea as to what they're in for. There are a few highlights, though. "Sukisa Sukisa Sukisa," a cover of the Zombies song "I Love You," is particularly well performed, and call me crazy, but I really dig their version of the Walker Brothers' "Annabella," even though they completely mangle the lyrics.
Moving onto the extra-musical aspects, the packaging from Teichiku is excellent, as always, with heaps of information provided that I will never--barring a sudden ability to grasp Japanese--understand. The sound quality is typical Teichiku reissue quality, with good sources spoiled a bit by overzealous, "squishy" noise-reduction (there's an earlier Phillips edition of the disc without noise reduction, but that is mastered very bass-light).
The verdict? Avoid. The best tracks are availible on several compilations, anyway...although if you find the old Phillips "Carnabeats collections" discs, you might consider those to be a viable alternative.
