Although not as punchy and melodic as Band Geek Mafia (the most profound VGS album to date), Firme is the album you'd play to the mate you want to become a Voodoo Glow Skulls junkie. Every song on this album chews up the all the bland ska/punk thats around at the moment (i'm talking Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris, [spunge], grr..!) and spits it back in your face leaving you to lick the THRASH/SKA sound that is the voodoo glow skulls from your top lip!!! Frank's nasaly twang of his vocals is a great contrast to the savage edge of the VGS sound, as are the horns: fast, loud, proud. if you like ska, punk, harcore, thrash, whatever, YOU NEED THIS ALBUM!!! Charlie Brown will make you dance, Give Me Someone I Can Trust will make you sing and Fat Randy will make you laugh!! The skulls encoporate all aspects and genres of punk, ska and metal to create this crazy mish-mashed get-up-and-mosh CD!!! GET IT NOW AND SPREAD THE WORD!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, I didn't expect to like it 30 Nov 1999

Lemme get one thing straight first: I hate ska. I can't stand it. I like punk, but ska just doesn't sit well with me. Never the less, I loved this CD. It's clever and very well done. Most all the songs are good, from Shoot the Moon to Closet Monster (my favorite song on the album) to the classic Fat Randy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad buy to say the least....but I expected more. 19 Mar 1999

This CD is good, but some tracks I didn't like, but that's just me. The good ones are definitely Shoot the Moon, Charlie Brown, Drunk Tank, Empty Bottles, El Coo Cooi, Malas Palabras ("Bad Words" for all you un-spanish speakin folk), Land of Misfit Toys, and of course Fat Randy. The other 8 are mostly punk, with an occasional horn line thrown in, if you're lucky. So I guess you could say that this CD has a little sumthin for everyone. The best part is that it's full of many crazy skankin tunes. If you like ska and punk, I don't see how you could go wrong with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars VerY CooL! 2 Dec 1998

These guys rule. The horn section kicks and the vocals are goofy but cool. Shoot the moon, Fat Randy, and many others make this one a winner. I really dug this title, but after listening to it too much I got kind of sick of it. But it just keeps comin back for more! You will listen to it until you can't stand it no more, and after a week or two you will grab it off the shelf again to hear it rock! Check it out!
5.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive 6 Jun 2007

Not the album, mind you, but this review.

Little can I say that has not already been said in other reviews, but it is just so damn good I am compelled to throw in my 1 cent, as it were.

I'd be hardpressed to list a favorite song, because there isn't a single one among them that sucks or is just filler. Obviously, the speedy pacing of the songs sounds similar thanks to the furious precision of Jerry O'Neill's percussion, but the riffwork, choruses/melodies and -- lest we forget my favorite part -- brass section change it up so creatively, one is never left with a broken record (pun intended).

From the dirty swagger of "Malas Palabras" (instrumental) to the manic intensity of "Give Me Someone I Can Trust" and all preceding and subsequent cuts off this album, the ska/punk genre has never been more entertaining or original. Flawless musicianship aside, these guys are so unique that years after the ska trend came and went I'm still listening -- no one sounds like this!

Buy it. Repeated listenings are a common side effect.
