Amazon.co.uk Review

Fireworks has evolved into a versatile application for creating graphics for the Web. Many designers will use it as an alternative to Photoshop and in conjunction with Dreamweaver. Fireworks 3 for Windows & Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide can guide beginners through the maze of tools, palettes and panels and get them up and running within a few hours.

After a thorough introduction to the user interface, the book goes on to cover, in detail, how each tool and technique works. Much of this may already be familiar to readers with any amount of experience in paint or drawing programs since the tools and actions are similar. For example, the book shows how to draw vector curves using a pen tool, a skill also needed for Illustrator and Freehand. In other instances, although the actions maybe similar to those in other applications, the methods may differ, like using masks or applying effects. In Fireworks, most of the features are executed from individual panels (floating palettes). The step-by-step style of instruction here, which discusses individual tasks in small portions, is ideal for learning your way around these panels and all their options.

The Visual QuickStart Series is also known for the way each page is divided into a column of text and a column of illustrations. This edition includes an abundance of pictures and illustrations, so many in fact, it seems as though no instruction goes without a visual.

A beginner may have difficulty in the chapter on making GIF animations. Without a specific sample project at hand, the text may move a little too fast when explaining frames and tweening. On the other hand, intermediate users who have created animations using shareware apps or Photoshop will have no problems and may find this helpful in adding Fireworks to their arsenal of tools.

The book also covers slicing GIFs, creating rollovers and navigational bars and even swap image behaviour. There's an excellent series of tables showing all the preset patterns, gradients, brushes, effects and library images that come with Fireworks 3, as well as an extensive list of keyboard shortcuts. --Angelynn Grant, amazon.com

Topics covered: Creating artwork for the web using Fireworks3, including using paint, vector and text tools and effects, working with colour palettes, optimizing images for export, creating GIF animations, rollovers and navigational bars.

Give it a try 20 Mar 2001

I have just started with this book, and although not a raw beginner, I have found it very informative already (only on chapter 4). There are many aspects of Fireworks that can be overseen if you dont get this first, in other words dont rely with the on-line help that comes with the software.

Just what I needed 10 Mar 2000
By M. S. Cohen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I've been reading these Visual Quick Start books for some time, and I am very impressed with this one.

The author lays out the book in a very orderly manner. She starts with the basics of the program and goes all the way to really advanced topics like swap-image behaviors. Very complicated, yet explained totally.

She also explains why I should do something. This is good for anyone who is just starting out on the web. (Most books on other programs just tell you what to do and don't explain why.)

The chapter on color was terrific. It explained a lot about what web-safe colors are and when to use dithering. And the chapter on optimizing clearly explained when to use GIF and when to use JPEG.

I really appreciated the chapters on working with objects. I knew a little about Photoshop, but I didn't understand Fireworks object tools. This book explained it all clearly. (In fact, I now feel a little more comfortable using Photoshop's Pen tool.)

Finally, I liked the fact that there were individual chapters for Optimizing, Exporting, Slicing, Rollovers, Animations, and Hotspots. They covered everything I needed to understand those topics.

Now that I've got this book, I feel much more comfortable creating graphics for my pages.

This one is for beginners only 8 Mar 2000
By Traditional One - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I can only imagine this book being beneficial to someone who has never used any sort of graphics software. Of the approx 260 pages, 220 are used showing the reader how to use the standard drawing tools and associated functions, that most will find very redundant if they've EVER used Illustrator, Paint Shop Pro or anything similar. The really cool tricks that Fireworks can do, ie. image slicing, scripting, and exporting to Dreamweaver, get only a cursory overview in the last 30 pages. Regular users of graphics software, should probably look elsewhere for a more advanced title.

Too Vague 3 Aug 2000
By Michael J DeYoung - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I bought this book, spent an hour or two looking it over, and realized that I don't have the time to try and figure out how to apply what the author is trying to explain. I needed a true quick start book, with solid examples of applications. I brought it back and exchanged it for "Fireworks, Fast & Easy Web Development" by Lisa Lee. A much better book for someone who doesn't have a whole lot of time on their hands. It has solid examples of how to do things like create buttons, optimize images, etc., just what I needed.
