Product Description

Covering the rationale of having security at a site, the security concepts and firewall fundamentals, this guidebook shows readers how to use firewalls to protect their information on the WWW, and when to use them.

From the Publisher

The only complete reference on network computer security!
To cope with the various threats and dangers on the Internet, several security mechanisms were developed. The most popular is firewalls - the best method for securing a computer system or network. FIREWALLS COMPLETE by Marcus Goncalves is the a single resource to turn to for the latest, most complete information on firewall technologies, strategies, and all the main firewall products on the market.

FIREWALLS COMPLETE adds a new level to a professional's expertise by discussing all the components that makes the Internet, and any other network, unsecured. It describes and explains the protocols, standards, and APIs used on internetworking, as well as the security mechanisms, from cryptograph to firewalls. The included CD-ROM contains a complete review of the major firewall products available on the market, a selection of tools and applications, and more than 15 firewall demos.

Many of the important parts and features of firewalls are recent innovations, and thus were never covered in academic environments. Aimed primarily at network administrators, Internet managers, as well as anyone in need of a comprehensive reference about firewalls, FIREWALLS COMPLETE is written in a conversational style with practical information, tips, and cautions to help the Internet, network, and security administrator handle their tasks and responsibilities.

FIREWALLS COMPLETE is organized in three parts. Part I, "Introducing TCP/IP and the Need for Security: Firewalls" is a reference section that covers the rationale for having security at a site, Internet threats, security concepts, and firewall fundaments. Part II, "Firewall Implementations and Limitations" covers aspects involving firewall implementations considering the security limitations and advantages of plugging in security. It discusses how to use the various types of firewalls for the many different environments, and what to use where and how. Part III, "Firewall Resource Guide," provides an extensive resource guide on firewalls. It discusses the major firewall technologies and brands, their advantages and disadvantages, what to watch for, what to avoid, as well as what to look for in a firewall product.

Additionally, there are complete appendixes. These include a list of firewall vendors and products, a list of firewall utilities, a bibliography on firewall reading materials such as white papers and articles, and a webliography on firewalls that provides a list of URL links to sites offering general and technical information about firewalls and proxy servers.

Format:Paperback
The author bounces around various topics - some written very basic and some sections assume a great deal of knowledge. There is little consistency in the audience. Also, many of the firewall demos are out of date and do not install correctly. (I also would not call two .pdf files from a vendor a demo) All in all, keep your money.

The best one I've read! 15 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Overall speaking Firewalls Complete is the most complete book I ever read. The author provides a lot of information you can possibly find in a single book. Firewall concepts, encryption, and an outline of a list of firewalls are included. The CD itself is worth the price, as it brings several demos and few evaluation copies of the main firewalls available on the market.

This book is truly a partner if you're involved with strategical security planning. It provides information about the need for Internet security, why IP protocols are unsafe, the role of encryption technologies and an outline of the main firewall products available on the market, including demos and evaluations in the CD that comes with it.
