Chris Gunning's beautiful score reflects the emotional turmoil of Sophie Marceau and Stephen Dillane's characters with a mixture of subtle, low-key string-writing and a highly-charged violin solo. The sometimes sparse arranging reflects the bleakness of the film's principal setting, a cold winter spent in a huge and imposing country house. The more intimate and warm string writing then really highlights the warmth of the film's theme - firelight. Altogether an excellent score both in terms of how it serves the film and also as music in its own right.
