Product Description

FIREFOX was the supersonic thriller of a reckless Western scheme to hijack Soviet Russia's most lethally sophisticated warplane. FIREFOX DOWN is the stunning sequel to that daring undercover operation - a stupendous Mach-5 all-action read that will pin you to your seat with suspense! After a hair-raising landing, the hijacked Firefox lies entombed in a frozen lake 20 miles from the Norwegian frontier. Its pilot, Mitchell Gant, is running for his life from the tracker dogs and helicopter patrols of the KGB border guard. As international tension mounts, East and West wage a desperate behind-the-scenes battle - a frantic race to recover the Firefox! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Contrary to the other previous reviews made about this book, I believe 'Firefox Down' to be an excellent thriller that comes close to, or even equals, the quality of its predecessor.

I bought the hardback version so that I could re-read this book, not wishing to damage my signed paperback any further. It had been 25 years since I read the book; at age 15 I found it to be an exciting continuation of the story of a Russian warpalne. With Craig Thomas' amazing attention to the details of military equipment and tactics, it appealed to my teenage interests. As an adult I can now also better appreciate the character-driven elements.

The story starts only seconds after the ending of 'Firefox' and so the book cannot be analysed in isolation. 'Firefox' ended with the reader wanting more, and 'Firefox Down' delivers more aerial thrills and spills as well as a chance to better understand the character of Mitchell Gant. The KGB officer Demitri Priabin features much more and the seeds are sown for their next meeting in 'Winter Hawk'. There are as many hindering spanners and pit-falls to our heroes' progress as in a Spielberg film, keeping the reader gripped all the way.

An interest in the military, military aviation and the Cold War is required to fully appreciate this novel, but if you enjoyed the first book, this is a must read.

I read this book after reading the first 'Firefox' from library, I was disappointed. Whilst the first chapter has further encounters with Migs and Gant is left with decision of ditch into Finland as far as possble. It seemed the only thing left to write about was get captured by KGB then get out. Be flown by Harrier Jump Jet to the Firefox again, which amazingly gets dragged out of a frozen lake, rebuilt by Nato from their information sources and flown to the UK. I guess what Mr Thomas had focused on again was the Character Gant but without the chase to and with Firefox. It also appears the Soviets are especially thick in this book - you've chased him across the North Cape but you don't know where he crashed the plane? Sorry Mr Thomas it was good with First book, which then had a film by Clint Eastwood, but then it really was Firefox Down after that.

Down to earth 23 Feb 2000
Format:Paperback
Starting exactly one second after the end of 'Firefox', 'Down' is an inferior sequel that largely misses the point of the original - the Firefox itself, which spends all but the first chapter and last two pages drowned in a frozen river. Without the soaring aerial action of 'Firefox' the sequel is a dull, mechanical romp through the-then evil empire, as our hero, Gant, escapes from KGB capture to return to the downed aeroplane with a special forces detachment sent to salvage useful components from the wreckage. When the Firefox proves airworthy there comes a race against time to get it back into the air, although by that time the reader will have realised that Thomas is more of a John Le Carre-style spy thriller writer than a techno-fetishist.
