I had originally rented this book from a second-hand bookstore with the intent of returning it after I have finished reading it. Halfway through it, I changed my mind - I am going to keep it on my shelf for good.
This is a book about love and loss - how a father mourns and grieves for a son he lost to cancer. The tone is subdued and sombre, yet a wistful sadness pervades through the entire book. There is no vindictiveness, no self-pity, only a whisper of what could have been, and the quiet realisation that it can never be. It touches me greatly, and will leave an everlasting impact.
For parents, read this book now. Then go, and hug and kiss your children, for they are what you should live for.
