Product Description
A terrorist attack. A killer on the loose. And a final, desperate mission...Former SAS Captain Tom Jackson is a man with nothing to lose. A veteran of the most dangerous missions the Regiment could throw at him, his life was torn apart the day a terrorist attack killed his family. Now he leads a life of grief-stricken obscurity, the world of warfare nothing but a distant memory. People higher up the chain of command have other plans, however. They're in a mess of their own making, and unless they sort it out, thousands of innocent people will pay the price. And so they make Jackson an offer he can't refuse. An offer that will take him straight back into a brutal theatre of war. Only one person can help prevent the disaster that is waiting to happen, and that person is being held by the Taliban insurgency in the depths of a harsh Afghanistan winter. As Tom reluctantly prepares to undertake this final mission, he does so in the knowledge that it will stop a devastating terrorist attack - as well as achieve an ulterior motive of his own. As events begin to unfold, he starts to suspect that someone, somewhere is playing a game with him; that nobody can be trusted; and that in the murky world of international terrorism, things are very seldom quite what they seem...

From the Inside Flap
Former SAS Captain Will Jackson is a man with nothing to lose. A veteran of the most dangerous missions the Regiment could throw at him, his life was torn apart the day a terrorist attack killed his family. Now he leads a life of grief-stricken obscurity, the world of warfare nothing but a distant memory.

People higher up the chain of command have other plans, however. They’re in a mess of their own making, and unless they sort it out, thousands of innocent people will pay the price. And so they make Jackson an offer he can’t refuse. An offer that will take him straight back into a brutal theatre of war.

Only one person can help prevent the disaster that is waiting to happen, and that person is being held by the Taliban insurgency in the depths of a harsh Afghanistan winter. As Will reluctantly prepares to undertake this final mission, he does so in the knowledge that it will stop a devastating terrorist attack – as well as achieve an ulterior motive of his own.

But in the murky world of international terrorism, things are very seldom what they seem. And as events begin to unfold, Will starts to learn that someone, somewhere is playing a game with him; that nobody can be trusted; and that sometimes, you just have to fight fire with fire…

5.0 out of 5 stars Real issues wrapped up in brilliant fiction, 9 Nov 2008
By Mohamed (Blackburn) - See all my reviews
Terrorism all wrapped up with the issues of veterans returning to civilian life and all the anxiety that it brings. As far as thrillers go this was very good. The characters were deep and enthralling, keeping your interest all the way through. There was enough suspense to keep you turning the pages, and plenty of action. If you enjoy Lee Child`s Jack Reacher books then this will please you. I`m a series fan and enjoy Child and Michael Connelly books immensely, if you like the special forces and a terrorist plot kind of thriller read the 18th Brigade,The 18th Brigade (Soft Target Series) Blister and the`Soft Target` books by Conrad Jones. They are frightening and unputdownable!! The new Andy Mcnab is also a winner, I read it in two sittings. Back to the review, ten out of ten.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great page turning stuff, 13 Jun 2009
By J. H. R. Cornell (Guildford) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Firefight (Mass Market Paperback)
If you have enjoyed Chris Ryan or Andy McNab books in the past, I am sure you will enjoy this.

The plot is fairly standard stuff, former SAS soldier hunts down evil terrorist who is about to wreak havoc on London.

There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot and the book shows that not all baddies are as bad as them seem.

The book is very readable and a great page turner. I think it took me a couple of days to read and I found myself picking it up whenever I could.

Why only 4 stars rather than 5? It is very samey compared with the previous books and I didn't have that sense of sadness that I have when I finish an excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars compelling read
This is the best Ryan book to date.
It is a most compelling read with enough twists in the plot to keep on reading well into the wee hours. Read more
