Biography

The Wailin’ Jennys originated out of a guitar shop in Winnipeg in what was supposed to be a one-time performance, but since then have become one of the world’s premier acts in contemporary roots music. The original line-up consisting of Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody, and Cara Luft captured audiences with their obvious chemistry and stunning harmonies. The Wailin’ Jennys debut ... The many fans of the Canadians Ruth Moody, Nicky Mehta and Annabelle Chvostek who loved the earlier album "40 Days" will also love Firecracker. A wonderful follow-up. I thought it would be hard to match an album rightly described as "faultless". I have no doubt that FIRECRACKER is better. Annabelle, the "new" Jenny brings so much with her playing (especially mandolin and violin) and a thrilling, sultry voice which harmonises perfectly with Ruth and Nicky - as anyone who has been to see them live in the UK shows knows.

Each Jenny has written four songs and there is one arrangement of a traditional song. It is wrong to pick out individual tracks as they are all excellent. Some great contributions from other musicians.

It is shocking they are not better known here. For anyone coming across this by chance: if you love great folk/roots playing, wonderful voices and perfect harmonies, just take a chance and buy.

....with these voices! I have just returned home, with Firecracker on the car CD, having seen the Jennys live and whilst no CD could quite capture the almost religious experience of seeing and hearing them live, if that isn't possible this gets close to it. From beginning to end their harmonies can get you into a swoon. The Wailin Jennys are deserving of much greater recognition. Buy this CD and tell your friends to buy it!

Heard it on Bob Harris's show on Radio 2. Absolutely stunningly beautiful without being soft or sentimental. I played it to my class and it had the same effect on them - in fact one of my students went right out and bought it! American Country at its best. Similar vocal set up to Dixie Chicks. Great harmonies. Standout track is 'Prairie Town'. Unreservedly recommended if this type of thing is your bag.

The third recording from the amazing Wailin' Jennys is a real corker. It's hard to imagine a more beautiful album will be released this year. Following their first indie release and 2004's gorgeous 40 DAYS, FIRECRACKER is even better. While many are focusing this year on the nice vocalizing of the magisterial Emmylou Harris and the quite different Mark Knopfler on their album of duets, ALL THE ROADRUNNING, FIRECRACKER may get much less attention than it deserves. You won't hear more exhilarating harmony work than that of the Jennys in this new cd.

Ruth Moody--of the sweetest soprano and a folkie bent--and Nicky Mehta--with a poignant mezzo voice and an otherworldly outlook--join their newest member, Annabelle Chvostek--who has her own beautiful alto and a nice edgy sensibility. Annabelle replaces Cara Luft in the trio and brings something wonderful to their already impressive musicianship. They all play acoustic instruments with great skill: Ruth--the accordion and banjo, Nicky--the harmonica and guitar, and Annabelle--a great mandolin and violin. As in their previous recordings, each of the Jenny's manage to retain their own sound and songwriting style while forging an unmistakable "Jennys sound" that is intoxicating.

"Home" is the recurring image and theme of FIRECRACKER. Nine of the 13 songs directly address this:

--"leave the dream of hearth and home"

--"in a better home soon I will reside."

--"a place to call your own, to call your home."

--"take me back to my beginning...take me home."

--"follow heart, follow home...one round heart, one round home."

--"now the coldest day of winter has made a home of my heart.
