Whilst living in the US, I discovered the Firebird imprint, which publishes fantasy novels for young adults in paperback. Their author list is impressive, and this anthology contains short works by many of them. Highlights include a cat story by Diana Wynne Jones, a return to the world of Sherwood Smith's Crown Duel books, a folk tale in graphic format from Emma Bull and Charles Vess, and a delightful, whimsical modern-day fairy tale from Megan Whalen Turner. There is a bit of science fiction thrown in too, and some new interpretations of old tales.
Even if you do not usually read short stories, this anthology is a must for lovers of fantasy and related genre writing. Perhaps thanks to J.K. Rowling, the field seems exceptionally strong at the moment, and there are many new voices to discover in this book as well as old favourites.
The only reason I have given the book four stars and not five is because I think the follow-up, Firebirds Rising, is even better. Don't miss either one.
