Whilst living in the US, I discovered the Firebird imprint, which publishes fantasy novels for young adults in paperback. Their author list is impressive, and this anthology contains short works by many of them. Highlights include a cat story by Diana Wynne Jones, a return to the world of Sherwood Smith's Crown Duel books, a folk tale in graphic format from Emma Bull and Charles Vess, and a delightful, whimsical modern-day fairy tale from Megan Whalen Turner. There is a bit of science fiction thrown in too, and some new interpretations of old tales.

Even if you do not usually read short stories, this anthology is a must for lovers of fantasy and related genre writing. Perhaps thanks to J.K. Rowling, the field seems exceptionally strong at the moment, and there are many new voices to discover in this book as well as old favourites.

The only reason I have given the book four stars and not five is because I think the follow-up, Firebirds Rising, is even better. Don't miss either one.

Favorite Firebirds 10 May 2004
Format:Hardcover
What an anthology!!
With most of my favorite authors' works, I can't ask for more.

The first story I read is Beauty, by Sherwood Smith, which tells us about Meliara and Vidanric's children (a MUST READ for Court-Crown Duel fans). Then I read Sir Lloyd Alexander's Max Mondrosch and got a ghost bump a bit because the dark comedy in it.

And a story from Megan Whalen Turner (my fave author of The Queen of Attolia), which tells us about a strange baby that was deposited in a bank deposit box. It has magic and wit in it. Really an entertainment.

And a whole bunch more of them like Garth Nix, Susan Farmer (the author of the House of Scorpion), etc. I don't want to give them all away. Just order and buy it for keepsake. Really a favorite book!!
