2.0 out of 5 stars Really poor 28 Nov 2008
Format:Paperback
After all the glowing reviews on this page, and already being a fan of Lackey, I was really looking forward to reading this. It takes forever to get going, the main character is just boring - he's just a generic nice guy and a bit of a wimp. As usual in Lackey's book, characterisation is poor, excessively so in the case of Ilya's brothers and father, but none of the characters are likeable or even entertaining. I finished it because I wanted to see if it got better but it really doesn't. Read The Fairy Godmother or Phoenix and Ashes instead.

2.0 out of 5 stars it's an 'ok' book -- but I expected better 15 Dec 1997
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I found the book just a little boring -- I couldn't finish it and actually skipped to the last few pages so that I could just find out what happened...only to find that I'd skipped the main thrust of the whole storyline. I expected better from Ms. Lackey, especially after _The Fire Rose_, which in my opinion is far better. I wouldn't recommend this to someone just starting to read Ms. Lackey's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Smash Hit With An Amazing Plot! 28 May 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book turns midevil Russia into a child's fantasy world. With magical beings and a character who captures your heart, you can't help but fall in love. I couldn't put it down! I loved how the story flowed, and all the the wonder involved in the storyline. There was a great twist at the end, as any good author adds, so the finish is unexpected. My only complaint was that the synopsis on the back cover of the paperback was slightly inaccurate- If you read it, you'll know what I mean. The plot left nothing to be desired.
