Bob Brozman picked up a guitar at the age of 5 and even at that young age was showing a fascination with repeating melodies and their subtle progressions of rhythm and timbre. Aged 12, Brozman’s interest in blues lead him to discover the National guitar and he subsequently launched a quest for any music made on the instrument, discovering Hawaiian music and a variety of jazz styles in ... Product Description

Product Description

"FIRE IN THE MIND is a collection of mood stories, told in rhythm and timbre. It goes further and deeper than my older CDs. There is passionate playing on a variety of new and old stringed instruments, including instruments not normally used for blues. The compositions are informed and inspired by a rhythmic dialog between myself and Jim Norris on drums - our lively interaction was an integral part of this recording. I feel that the vocals on this album span a wider range of timbre and emotion than those in my previous work, and some of these melodies have been floating through my mind for a long time. Tradition is a moving object, as musicians absorb sounds through a lifetime of listening, and create new sounds with their bare feelings. My musical ancestors, from Charley Patton to Tau Moe and Sol Hoopii, not only learned from their ancestors; they also absorbed ideas from other kinds of music outside their cultures, thereby pushing their traditions forward. In my world travels, I have expanded this concept geographically to include music from faraway places and music far from the traditional Delta blues that first inspired me. These new blues are meant to inspire you. Music for me is something constantly full of feeling, something a person never finishes learning how to express. Taking risk is paramount. Dedicated to musicians and music lovers everywhere, with great sincerity", Bob Brozman

4.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic blues and so much more... 29 Oct 2012
By G. E. Harrison TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I normally associate Bob Brozman with acoustic blues played with a slide on a National guitar but a quick look through his most recent records reveals that he has diversified, including both playing other instruments and taking in music from other cultures. This record sees him using his prestigious slide technique but often embellishing it with other musical idioms rather than just blues, so for example "Rhythm is the thing" sounds like an Indian raga. Although the record is still acoustic many tracks feature Jim Norris on percussion, which gives these tracks an extra dimension from most `guitar' albums - just listen to "Cannibal stomp" which really rocks. Although mainly instrumental Bob does also sing and tracks like the very melodic "Strange mind blues" almost sound like the Beatles. So this is a very varied, entertaining album featuring great playing from Bob on guitar and also more exotic instruments, such as the ukulele - check out "Ow! My uke's on fire!" and you'll burn your own ukulele! However, just when you thought that Bob had given up straight blues the final track "Lonesome blues" features Bob playing a sensitive, eerie Skip James-style unaccompanied blues - wonderful!

4.0 out of 5 stars BB hits the mark 22 Oct 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Bob Brozman once again displays his stunning virtuosity on this the final album before his death in April. The blues tracks are particularly good. Those who have loved his music (as I have for many years) will not be disappointed and left to mourn the passing of a great musician.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique musical artist 24 Jan 2013
By GeraldBostock1972 - Published on
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Bob Brozman is master of several music styles and an outstanding virtuoso of a wide array of string instruments; but he is also an adventurer with a high lyrical force, a performer capable to express in a single composition his extraordinary sense of rhythm and his control of all those details and nuances that bring life to a work of art. In "Fire in the mind" you will find beautiful melodies, great instrumental compositions, acute social comentaries, desolated acoustic blues and powerful singing by a musician who never plays an indifferent note. Highly recommended.
