More About the Author

Lauren St John was born in Gatooma, Rhodesia, now Kadoma, Zimbabwe. At 11, she and her family moved to Rainbow's End farm and game reserve, the subject of her acclaimed memoir, and she grew up surrounded by animals, including eight horses, two warthogs and a pet giraffe. After nearly a decade as golf correspondent to The Sunday Times, followed by a sojourn in the US, riding the tour buses of alt. country stars like Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle and the Dixie Chicks, she wrote the bestselling White Giraffe series. Dead Man's Cove, the first in her new mystery series about 11-year-old detective, Laura Marlin, won the 2011 Blue Peter Favourite Story and Book of the Year Awards.

Review

The One Dollar Horse is certain to be huge favourite with readers and will bear comparison with classic horse stories by authors such as Patricia Leitch and K M Peyton. (BOOKS FOR KEEPS)

There are many twists and turns but the plot is easy to follow and gripping, I would recommend this book for girls aged from twelve through to adult. The author has a flowing style and an art for bringing her characters to life. (NEWBOOKSMAG)

Lauren St John's The One Dollar Horse is rare among pony books in setting its dream-come-true story in inner-city London... Writerly, full of equestrian knowledge and rich in character - not least of the horse - this is also a tale of first love, and is a handsome package with deep pink-edged pages. (Nicolette Jones THE SUNDAY TIMES)

...one of the best characters in this thrilling rags-to-riches tale is Storm Warning. You can't help but identify with this courageous animal and St John makes you feel the thrill of what it must be like to jump over a fence on such a horse with such heart and soul. No nagging doubts, this book's a winner. (Martin Chilton TELEGRAPH ONLINE)

Certain to be a huge favourite with readers and will bear comparison with classic horse stories by authors such as Patricia Leitch and KM Peyton. (BOOKS FOR KEEPS)

This book is amazing from start to finish I have to admit they a the most exciting was near the end of the book but there was not a DULL moment my heart skipped a beat when she could have falleN you wouldn't suspect quite a few things in this amazing story if you are going to read the book and you enjoy it please read the other books like race the wind they are extremely enjoyable but i would recommend it to over9 as there is quite grown up words in there which may offend young children

This book keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time.I would recommend this book to horse riders who know quite a bit about horses and 11 year olds and older because there is a couple of swear words in there.

I don't read a lot of books - but grabbed one of my daughter's books to read on holiday - the first in this triology The One Dollar Horse - I was gripped from the first page, finished it in a day. The second book, Race The Wind and then this one, Fire Storm were just as good. Totally recommend this triology. The books do need to be read in the correct order and they are all about one horse and its owner - so an interest in horses would probably help. Buy them!
