From the Back Cover

For Matt and his flying club, there weren't any options left. Trapped residents, threatened towns and one small airstrip safely upwind of the fire line. It's not a promising position, but they volunteer to help anyway, hoping a protected position and a close base might make a difference to the fire fighters. And then the wind changes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing read 13 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
Bush fires are unfortunately a hallmark of summer. In the past decade Australia has faced a serious fire threat resulting in loss of lives and property every year. Thankfully I have been directly involved only once, menaced by flames and thick, ashy smoke on either side of the road as my husband (then boyfriend) and I headed out to his parent's property (well away from the fires).
Set in New Zealand, Fire Season is a dramatic novel that illustrates the horror of being in the path of a raging inferno. The residents of Brooke's Vale are certain they will be safe from the fire, it has been 120 years since the valley's natural defenses have been breached. At the Vale's small airstrip, Matt, Jim, Jill and Rose warily watch the smoke billow across the landscape. Matt and Jim are pilots and as it becomes increasingly obvious that the fire front is uncontrolled they use Matt's crop dusting plane to assist with the fire fighting efforts. Yet the fire continues to rage, and the Valley's residents find themselves trapped by the steadily advancing flames.
Fire Season begins slowly as the fire burns a familiar path outside of the Valley but as the fire's threat to the Vale's residents grows, so does the pace of the storyline. Holland's timeline cover's just over four days charting the fire's movement and increasing threat. The tension is built deliberately as the residents anxiety grows culminating in their frantic efforts to escape the razing of their valley. Their perilous flight from the Vale is a nail biting climax.
Holland's characters are well developed and I thought their emotions and behaviour genuine. Matt's frustration and horror as he fails to save a young family from the maelstrom and Jim's exhaustion at flying is such high pressure conditions rings true. So does the fear and panic the residents experience when they realise they are trapped.
Holland's careful research and experience in aviation shows in his detailed descriptions of the planes and their flight. It is easy to imagine the heat and winds buffeting the small plane as it flies above the burning landscape. The depiction of the fire fighting efforts also seem accurate.
Fire Season captures the horror of a surging fire front and the bravery of small communities that face the terrifying threat. Well written and suspenseful this novel is an absorbing read.

Fire Season is really well researched. It's packed with aviation references and the characters are very believable. When disaster strikes, and all that is left for the community is the growing sense of panic, the community comes together to beat the odds.

The action is fast paced, and as a reader I found it to be like a technicolor film as I read, transfixed by what was taking place on the pages. Nail bitingly real and vivid, I found this very easy to imagine being on the big screen. The emotions and terror filled reality of what the characters go through is so tangible I could almost taste it, the thrilling climax which decides the communities fate is not to be missed.

A fantastic book, which had me on the edge of my seat once the drama started.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book of a Community in Action! 5 April 2011
By KW - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
It's fire season and fires are blazing worse then ever. The fire department and volunteer recruits are overwhelmed as they begin to accept help from local crop sprayers to try and contain the inferno. Matt has already allowed his nephew Rob to take out one of his planes to help with evacuation efforts, but when he is told the threat is rising for Brooks Vale and he needs to dump his fuel tank- he decides it would be a waste not to use the fuel instead. He fuels up his crop sprayer and fills the tank with water to join the effort.

The fire is winning and as the threat rises at his home airstrip of Brooks Vale and the surrounding community, hard decisions must be made to save the town or themselves.

------------

I really enjoyed this book. It was slow at times and spoke technically about the fire efforts and plane manuevers a lot. There are many back and forth missions of water drops that are uneventful, but not so much so to make me lose interest. I feel like I actually learned quite a bit about small planes and fire battles! The characters are rich and their interactions natural and unforced. I loved the multi layered personalities each character brought forward.

I hit the climax of the story a bit late, about two thirds of the way through, but because of the strong characters and emotions I felt for them in their situation it carried through for a strong finish. A wonderful and realistic story. This book is certainly suitable for teenagers, young adults, and adults. There are only a few brief moments of strong language, but it is fully in context to the moment.

If you know someone who loves planes or fire fighting, this would be especially great for them- but I wouldn't limit this book to just that crowd. It was entertaining, a great vacation book.
3.0 out of 5 stars Fire Season by VH Folland 7 Feb 2012

Fire Season by V.H. Folland is a great read for those who like suspense and maybe even a little learning. This story takes place in Brooke's Vale and tells us about a depressed man and what he and his flying club must do to save their remote home and the survivors that they can from out of control wildfires that are Hell bent on destroying everything in the way.

If you ever wondered what it is like to be the pilot who is trying to put out all the wildfires that all the dry hot "fire seasons" bring and then having to choose between your home and those you care about or the lives and homes of others you volunteered and promised to protect then I would give this book a read. It has such technical detail and imagery it seems like you are apart of it all too.
