Biography

By the late 1980s, DC's punk underground had produced dozens of bands, but only a handful of the musicians were women. This was not a fair representation of the DC punk community, however, as there were many women active throughout the scene, and this disparity had already become a much discussed topic within the ranks. The members of Fire Party were certainly aware of this situation, but ... Read more in Amazon's Fire Party Store

This 1996 Dischord Records release is the complete discography of Fire Party's musical output, they were made up of four females with Natalie Avery (Guitar & Vocals), Amy Pickering (Vocals), Kate Samworth (Bass & Vocals) and Nicky Thomas (Drums), they were formed around 1986 in Washington DC after the hardcore punk period started to evolve into Emo by groups like Embrace (not the late 90's UK band) and Rites Of Spring.

During their short period Fire Party only released two EP's, a self titled and New Orleans Opera including a song on the various artists compilation State Of The Union and four songs recorded for the John Peel Seesions in 1989 which makes up the last four tracks which are all on this CD. On the Peel Sessions they only re-recorded one previous song of theirs "Basis" which is far better then the original version and three new tracks.

Not every song is great only thirteen out of the nineteen songs are good hence my four stars rating but to prove how influential this band was in regards to the female singer songwriter riot girl period which emerged in the early 90's listen to Liz Phair's song "Jealousy" (from her 1994 Whip Smart album) it was more or less based on Fire Party's "New Orleans Opera" lyrically and musically, if you like Post Hardcore Punk or early Emo then I would highly recommend this CD.

This has to be one of the most underrated bands to come out of the 80s DC hardcore scene probably ranking alongside Scream. The comparison to Fugazi I would say are not entirely accurate unless you are specifically referring to the first EP 13 songs. It kind of reminds me a bit more of Rites of Spring or possibly Embrace.

This is a compilation of all their tracks on one CD so it really is the one to track down. The one disappointment I feel is the increasing price of Dischord stuff that kind of feels like a bit of a kick in the teeth to their old ethics. Can remember the good old days when these were on a fixed price. Oh well.....

Great album 29 Jan 2008

Dang, this thing sounds like a female Fugazi, except all the songs are done by Guy Picciotto. The pounding vocals and soft spoken but furious harmonics over chunky rhythm guitars will surely satisfy any post-hardcore/hardcore punk fan. The only reason that this is not a five is that it did nothing to expand the genre. Still a great album.
